I mostly use streaming services so hopefully it won't be too bad..
I use it for streaming and it works brilliantly.
Have you tried their AI Upscaling? how is it?
@Jerryngm: I use the AI upscaling for 1080 content on a 4k projector. Works fantastically.
For most users it wont be laggy. However only real time it is laggy is when you attempt to stream a BD Remux (e.g. non compressed Bluray). Which it struggles with.
Probably more a wifi limitations then the unit
I still have lag playing HQ videos despite connected via gigabit Ethernet and trying lots of trouble shooting. I think it's the actual shield unit. I also have the older shield which works perfectly in the same scenario.
YMMV, but it seems that others complain of the same problems.I'd recommend the Pro personally.
I have both units, the tube and the Pro, both connected via gigabit ethernet, the tube struggles on some 4k remuxes, no issues on the Pro.
I have heard of some people successfully using Kodi as their front-end rather than Plex, it might be a Plex issue, or a memory issue on the tube.As far as I can tell, the tube is great for upscaling and streaming services.
If you like to rip your UHD Blurays to your NAS like me, go Pro.
@dollarydoos: is plex trying to transcode or is it direct-streaming
@asa79: direct-streaming
@dollarydoos: thats strange, i would of thought even the basic would of had enough power
@asa79: Yeh me too, I'd love to be proven wrong!
@dollarydoos: Are you using the tube on a 4K TV?
I have a pro on a 4K TV and no issues with it.
However, I'm looking at buying a Shield tube for my bedroom 1080p TV to replace the Chromecast with Google TV that shits the bed with certain transcodes/codes.
I have a lot of remuxed content, although I likely won't be watching any of it on the secondary TV, but I'm hoping it won't be an issue for me.
I play everything through Plex and my server can manage transcode 4K so I just don't want to invest in a tube and have the same issue as the CC.
@fredskis: Tube was previously on the 4K TV but crashed a bit with 4K remuxes via Plex, now collecting dust.
I haven't tried playing 4K content on a 1080p TV tbh, I'm not sure if it would server-transcode or play direct (with the tube itself downscaling).
This just the normal Shield BTW. You should be buying the Pro. Much better
Pro is great. Good to see we are post pandemic pricing finally.
Pre, you meant?
Both actually work lol
upvoted cause I thought it was the pro, woops. if you're not going to get the pro I'd get the chromecast tv instead.
If you wanted HD Audio codecs like Atmos, then you aren't going to get it passed through on a Chromecast TV. If you dont care about HD Audio then doesn't matter on which one you get.
The pro was one of my favourite purchases of last year. Great if you want to make a plex server without buying a NAS. For those wondering, the upscaling works well but be aware it is not supported in a number of apps, so if you want to use it for a specific purpose be sure to make sure it's compatible. Also don't set it to high, works best at a subtle low-medium setting.
Anyone recommend a decent replacement remote?
an app on your phone?
joking right?
you can use the android TV remote app as a last resort.
I got one of the recommended 3rd party remotes for about $20 and I can't get it working.
I was looking at getting a 1st party remote:
https://www.harveynorman.com.au/nvidia-shield-tv-remote-2020…I have the old NVIDIA Shield and the included remote is very laggy. Thankfully it also came with the game controller so I'm just using that.
Just waiting for Pro to return to Deal status but thanks OP, at least it proves my OZB alerts are working.
Just curious, how do you setup alerts for deals?
That's cool. Thanks :)
Spend extra for the pro, this one is pretty laggy from what I heard
