Recommend me a phone plan

Hello! First time poster in this topic.

I am currently paying $55/month for an out of contract phone plan with Telstra and getting 40gb of data.

What I like:

  • 20-40gb of data works well for me
  • I go on lots of bikepacking adventures, so I think being on Telstra saves me some $$ in not requiring an emergency GPS tracking device (thus far).

However, I'm not sure if I am paying too much. I see a lot of Telstra deals that seem to be for new customers only. Long live the loyalty tax!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Finder.com has a helpful tool to filter mobile plans, might be worth checking out as a starting point to narrow down your options

Perhaps port over to Boost or Woolies mobile then port back to Telstra when there is a gift card deal at JB or Good Guys?

You mean you need signal strength in remote areas? Telco coverage will vary with location.

    Boost - $233 for 12 months & 240gb

Boost is full Telstra 4G network (just not 5G)

Whether that's 6 months or 12 months usage for you, that's still $19.42-$38.83 per month

  • I am on CatchConnect's 12 months plan (optus network) for $130 that I got with unidays discount (possibly cashback as well) for $90. It is pretty decent for me. Previously I was on Kogan (vodafone network). It wasnt as good.

Between them I was on Amaysim for a month (optus network). It was also very adequate.

it will expire in 3 months and I will have to look at my options again. I am on a tight budget.

Telstra deals are eligible for old customers, I swear I post this on every JB deal and people still miss it.

New connections qualify for their deals, so you just need to sign up to a new number, and then go into Telstra and ask to cancel the old plan and swap the old number to the new plan. Takes five minutes and I have done it three times in 18 months. If you are in the market for a new phone, that would be the best option as you can pretty much get the plan for free if you were already paying for the phone. Otherwise I best gift cards usually top out at $800 on a $99 plan before which would bring it down to $32 a month or so. Better if you can score the $10 discout per month on the plan as well.

  • How much is an 'emergency GPS tracking device'?

  • Do you want/need a new phone?
If so, the JB deal might be best, $99pm but often comes with an $800 (or even $900) credit towards a new handset. At $800 it works out at $32.33pm; at $900 it comes to $24pm. That's for 150GB data pm, Telstra 5G available.
Woolworths Mobile offers Telstra 4G 145GB for $200, with a 365 expiry. At 20GB/pm usage, that would last 7.25 months, so $27.58pm.
On the other hand, if you can tidy up your data usage to 18GB, Woolworths pay by the month is $25, or for 35GB it's $35.
All the Woollies deals provide for 10 percent off for one shop a month. If you already do one large shop a month, worth considering.
