  • For your safety, sign up with a VPN provider based outside of the Five Eyes [Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the United States] jurisdictions. They are compelled to comply with domestic or foreign court orders. Nord VPN is based in Panama.

    • Hi WrightRightWriteRite,

Indeed you are correct! But a bit curious as to why you felt compelled to mention Nord on our thread?

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

      • Only mentioned Nord VPN because I use their service (and chose them for that very reason). Not sure where you are based.

        • Ah, no problem!

Well feel free to give us a go if you like. It is completely free for 3 days ( no payment information required ) and we have a great refund policy. You can read about it at https://www.oeck.com/terms-of-service/

          Regards,
          Peter @ Oeck.

          • @OECK: Thanks, I may in the future. I'm sure most are not fussed about the Five Eyes and court orders, they just want US Netflix access. ;)

            • @[Deactivated]: True. People should be fussed how a VPN service sets up its infrastructure and how they handle the no-logs policies.

As far as US Netflix, we offer 30 Netflix regions which you can independently set on a per-device basis :)

              Regards,
              Peter @ Oeck.

              • @OECK: Is Netflix Japan one of the 30 regions?

                • @nfr: Hi nfr,

At the moment, no. We are having trouble finding residential IP address space in that region. We don't use datacentre IP addresses for our unblocking methods, so it is proving to be a pain at the moment. Sorry about that!

                  Regards,
                  Peter @ Oeck.

    • Nord is headquatered in the us now.

      • You better tell their CEO to update their website and Wikipedia then

    Hi Oeck,

Just to confirm, are you based in one of the Five Eye countries?

    Thanks

      Hi clot10,

We are Australian, but the company is incorporated offshore ( due to stupid data-retention laws in Australia ). Here is a copy/paste from our FAQ -

Under which jurisdiction is Oeck incorporated?

For the safety of our customers, Oeck is incorporated in Hong Kong ( currently ).
Oeck does not have any servers located in Hong Kong whatsoever.
Hong Kong has good privacy laws at the moment. However, we have no doubt that China will keep chipping away at the rights of Hong Kong citizens, so we expect a "data retention" law to be passed as soon as they can. However, it won't mean businesses need to comply on that same day. It is a very large task so we would expect 12 month period for businesses to comply with the new laws if/when they pass.

Having said that, we like to stay ahead so we are getting everything ready to relocate to Singapore. They have good privacy laws and we believe it will be a suitable country for Oeck. It is not a quick process, but this is what will be best for our users and for us.

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

  • I am a very popular Youtuber, will you sponsor my videos? /s

We don't really do sponsorships, even if you were a Youtuber.

      Peter @ Oeck.

  • Interesting, I like the focus on server ownership and security — I think this is often overlooked with VPNs.

I'd be interested to see a bit more detail in the FAQ. For example, from a quick browse I couldn't see the VPN protocol mentioned anywhere. The front page mentions you use AES for symmetric, so I guess that means OpenVPN or IPsec and not Wireguard? No Wireguard would be a killer for me: it's the only protocol that doesn't tank phone battery life in my experience, and the newer, leaner codebase makes it far easier to audit and trust.

It's a hard market to penetrate, especially when you're pricing yourselves above trusted names like Mullvad on all but the 2 year plans. Independent auditing of your app / network infrastructure would probably go a long way towards establishing that kind of trust.

Seems like you're focusing on substance and not marketing though which is nice to see, good luck!

      Hi MetaAF,

You are correct. We currently only support OpenVPN. Wireguard will come in the future, but there are still some issues with it, and it is not as widely supported as OpenVPN. Due to the way Wireguard works, it also isn't as elegant as OpenVPN to implement. But it is something we will absolutely be supporting in the future.

The market is indeed hard to penetrate and unfortunately, it is proving to be almost impossible to get people to review us as thus far, all of them have asked for an affiliate programme in order to do so ( basically a paid review at that point, something which we are against ). The auditing of apps/networks is ( in my opinion ) basically a load of BS. It doesn't actually prove anything and just hinders small VPN companies making a name for themselves as they don't have $60,000 to throw towards a bit of paper.

We built this network and service from the point of view of customers. We just hope others enjoy the service as much as we do.

Having said that, I know you really want Wireguard. But please feel free to try us out as we offer many features that are simply not found in any other VPN service on the market :) Also, our apps are fairly light weight, so you may want to see how it goes for battery life. It is free for 3 days ( we don't even require payment information ). So it will cost you nothing to test :)

Thank you for your kind wishes too!

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.

Yeah possibly true to an extent. At the same time, from the audits I've skimmed it seems very rare that they find absolutely no issues, and it would certainly be reassuring to see — although I can see how it might be prohibitively expensive for a startup. One thing you could do to aid trust and transparency at no cost would be to open-source your client, if you haven't already.

I might give the trial a go at some point, although in all honesty I don't really see myself switching from Mullvad. For me personally I don't need access to international streaming sites or per-device profiles and filtering, which seem to be some of your main selling points. Maybe others might get value out of those though.

        • +2

This is also true. But as you said, it is expensive for a start up unfortunately. We did want to open source our apps, but due to us using proprietary libraries ( libvpn.net ) we are unable to do so. However, their code does get audited. We also allow users to use any OpenVPN app they choose to.

Mullvad are a very good VPN service. We did reach out to Mullvad early on and they gave us some help regarding payments which was nice of them, as well as tested our service and gave their opinion which was good.

When we offer Wireguard I'll reach out to you and you can take a look at how our VPN operates. Thanks for the chat :)

          Regards,
          Peter @ Oeck.

  • I have a membership - can i purchase at this rate and it will extend? Or only new customers?

    • Hi wataripoff,

If you submit a support ticket I am happy to take a look :)

      Regards,
      Peter @ Oeck.
