Aftermarket iPhone Screen Replacement - Worth It?

Hi, I recently cracked the screen of my iPhone X. Wondering if anyone has had good experiences with an aftermarket screen repairer? If so, is there anyone you recommend in Melb?

It’s been 5yrs since I repaired my iPad with an aftermarket screen and from memory the touch sensitivity was not quite right.

For context, Apple want $439 to repair the screen, which I can’t justify.

Thanks.

  • iPhone X is incredibly easy to replace the screen. Get a kit off eBay and DIY in 15 mins.

Note: If you get a complete kit version then it's straight swap without half the extra steps of taking components like speakers off the old one. Just replace the entire unit in one go.

  • Thanks, assuming there should be no performance issues with the aftermarket part? Ie. inconsistent touch response

    • Double check on this, but there might be some performance issues.

I recently did a screen replacement on my iphone 7 and I think auto brightness doesn't work anymore. I read online that I need to clone data from the original screen to the replacement screen to fix this issue.

I had the screen of my LG G2 replaced with quote genuine parts unquote. It was terrible and obviously not genuine. Weird screen artefacts and inconsistent touch. Bought a new phone about three weeks later.

For something you have to live with every day I don’t think it’s worth going non-genuine.

I’ve heard lots of complaints from people who use those middle of the shopping centre repairs (on screen colour reproduction, resolution, etc)

  • I’ve had multiple screen replacements on my iphones over the years (had 2 in two days this year, that was fun).
I always opt for the cheap option of aftermarket unless it’s a brand new iPhone and covered by apple care.

Never had an issue. (For reference, i estimate about 8 screens over 4 different iPhones over 7 ish years)

Also worth considering is an iPhone X is probably worth around $500 these days… better off buying a second hand one with a working screen and selling yours for $200ish as is.

    • Sounds like you need a decent cover.

      • Life proof/ otterbox help but are not miracle workers.

Just been unlucky at work. Covers have only stopped it getting completely crushed.
I’m happy to take a broken screen over a flattened iphone though, so they do their job.

        • You, really, need to stop using them as hammers :)

I go for the phonecovers that have a flap for the screens. Fingers crossed but so far so good.

  • I was in the same boat with an iPhone XS. Tried about 3 aftermarket screens from one eBay seller—all meant to be good quality OLED, the last one was marked as "OEM". They all looked great and generally functioned correctly (they were even programmed for true tone). But scrolling with a thumb was jerky on all of them, and reading news or books became a unenjoyable experience. I ended up selling the phone. Next time I would probably either sell the damaged phone straight away or pay Apple to replace the screen despite the cost.
