Getting Calls from Random People Saying That They Got a Missed Call from Me

Hi guys,

I was wondering if someone has the same mobile phone issue as me. Or perhaps have an idea as to what is going on?

Lately, I have been getting calls from random people saying that they got a missed call from me. These calls are from different people and different mobile numbers. They all say that they got a missed call from my number and hence were returning my calls. I know it wasn't me so I'm not sure how they are getting missed call from my phone number. Has my phone number been hacked or something?

Any ideas on what to do would be appreciated. Changing my phone number is not an option for me.

Thank you!

Sounds like a spammer is spoofing your number for their calls. They will move onto a new one soon enough. Not much you can do really.

yeah been spoofed.. the number of complaints we have about this at work is crazy (work for telstra), and apart from changing your number, not much you can do.

      • do you think this is temporary? Should I just wait it out? Thanks!

Yeah, tends to be in 2 week cycles and then it fizzes out. Might be worth speaking to your phone provider and giving them the heads up and to monitor for any change requests

Phone spoofing is when someone disguises the number they are calling or texting from by changing their caller ID. Some businesses do this legally and for legitimate reasons.

But phone scammers around the world have also cottoned onto it.

They hijack or imitate phone numbers, either to imitate a person, business or department to get money or information. Or to appear like a local or legitimate number to increase their chances of getting through to their victim.

Sometimes they randomly spoof the number of an ordinary person. And then things get really complicated.

    • thanks for the article link! Interesting read.

  • Who is your mobile provider? I'm having the same issue with Boost.

  • I'm gettin 2-4 calls a day from random mobile #s with the fake amazon recorded message..
    just keep blockin em.

    • I'm just going to keep sending them iTunes gift cards until they stop calling. Surely they will have enough soon!

I was recently receiving calls from numbers very similar to mine but either the last or last 2 digits were different.

As I use DND full time they never actually disturbed me.

Same happened to me and missus last week. Only last 2 digits are different. I think they are trying to spoof a number closer to us thinking that it would be from a family member (family member numbers = bought together)

    Someone has spammed your number.

It will stop in a week or two.

    Don't stress

  • How do you spoof a number?

    • Phone systems display the actual line number to the telco, but can override that in the end user presentation (so a call can appear to come from the business switchboard, for example).
This didn't really used to be a problem, as the gear to make it happen was enterprise costly. Now you can use a free asterisk server on a desktop computer plugged into a VoIP supplier, so the barrier to ding this is much lower.

If the spammer moves on after a week or two to a new number, it is a hassle for the telcos to chase down the spoofing, as nobody is really screaming about it.

  • Had the same thing a few months back, it stopped after a while.

ISPs are aware and won't fix this as it costs $$$$$. Call your local federal MP to complain.

    • How do you propose they fix it when the calls are likely originating from overseas somewhere?

  • I have exact same problem atm. I am with Boost. Has anyone found the solution yet besides waiting or changing the phone number?

I did talk to boost chat service but wasn't much of a help
