How big is the yard? That will determine whether you go electric or petrol. I'd recommend Bosch or Stihl. Based on personal experience, I'd suggest staying away from Homelite, one of the brands sold at Bunnings. Too much starting trouble (petrol version).

    • I will go for petrol as get more power. My backyard is quite big ( dnt knw excat size in sq m - its rental property )

+1 to stralya's comment. Definitely steer clear of Homelite, they once had a good reputation but in recent years every bit of gear I've seen with their name on it has been junk…thank goodness Bunnings has a generous return policy! Same goes for McCulloch, the only diff is that they never had a good name! :p

If you're gonna be using it a lot, I'd get a straight shaft one that you can put blades on, it won't cost you a lot more but when it come time to clear a yard full of woody weeds you'll plough thru it without wasting all of your line! ;)

        • McCulloch no good at all?

I came across McCulloch line trimmer at HN for $179 straight shaft one, was thinking of getting but now mind chnaged aftr reading ur post.

Yep, no good at all in my experience unfortunately. I would go for a Stihl!

A family member bought a McC chainsaw a while back despite my advice & it was worse than useless, difficult to start, wouldn't run, cutting out at random times…when he took it back to Bunnings to replace it with a Stihl, the staff said they do still get a hell of a lot of McC stuff back. I have mates with cheap no-name gear they bought off ebay that is way better than McC!

That confirms my experience many years ago when I was labouring, my old boss got so angry that he literally threw a brand new McC chainsaw into the bush after less than a day's use & left it there to rot. Back then Stihl had a well deserved reputation, nice to see that hasn't changed! :)
