Windows 10 Update Breaks Taskbar

Just a PSA.

I noticed the other day that my system tray icons went all screwy and/or disappeared. Only the ones on the right hand side of the taskbar. Took a bit of figuring it out but it seems the addition of 'news and interests' into the taskbar is the culprit. The solution so far is to enable 'news and interests' (right-click on taskbar) and then disable it. Since I did that the problem has gone away (but I haven't restarted the PC either).

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else has noticed the problem in the last few days.

No issues with my desktop or lappy with 21H1 or any of the updates including last night's updates.

    • cool. I only noticed it on one PC and not the other, but plenty of reports around the web of people having the same issue.

As soon as I saw that feature on the update I just disabled it (frickin' useless anyway)

    No issues since.

  • My laptop and PC running 21H1 are running fine, no taskbar issues.

I've updated a lot of machines and no issues with any of them.

  • It happened on 2 desk tops, 1 laptop, and 1 netbook here (21H1). Disabled straight away.

Hate it when Microsoft geeks decide that I need their useless programs without bothering to ask if I do.

  • I got a new feature in the task bar with last night's update (21H1 build 19043.1052) showing weather info, just got rid of it.

    • Turned it off or actually uninstalled the feature?

        turned it off

If you don't mind playing with your registry there's an 'uninstall', rather than just a 'turn off' function, fix here. You download a .zip file.

      thanks :)

Tried the reg file but it didn't work. Oh well, I'll wait for MS to fix it, I can still do my on/off trick and don't restart the PC that often.
