Laptop for my Grandma

My grandmas interested in a laptop.
She would like one with the keyboard size of a macbook, or standard I suppose, (not small netbook)

I suppose her price range would be up to $600-$700 but she will mainly use it for playing solitaire etc..

Needs hardly any hard drive 100-200gb tops. she doesn't know how to install anything.

She'll need basic microsoft office (i'll get that for her)

So, what do you guys think? Toshiba? Asus? what is there?

The best price would probably be $500<

  • Anything will do. Might be best to take her to a store so that she can inspect the screen/keyboard and see what works best. Given that it was specified as a laptop, does that mean that weight and robustness are factors?

  • She likes my sister Acer aspire one, but yeah thanks

  • I needed exactly the same thing for my mother and waited a couple of days and bought the deal of the day from Shopping Square $300 HP 15.6 something or other, didnt pay much attention as it was just for use for Mahjong and E-Books.
Nice and cheap and when it is destroyed after playing Solitaire 24/7 or Dropped or Tea spilled or fallen asleep on or had a cassette stuffed in the CD Drive not such a loss.

sounds like a fair swap….. how old is she?

Officeworks local store seems to often have some good buys at reduced prices.

    • Go by the wear on the teeth.

  • for 600-700 you can get an i7 laptop these days.

    • Only need i5 tops. Will go with her and compare i5 and i3. She what she wants.

  • Surely yours would be good enough for her and she can spot you an upgrade? ;)

  • I would definitely recommend a Lenovo. For that price you should easily be able to get her an i5 and it'll probably include Office Starter too.

  • One thing to think about is getting a lower res screen due to poor eyesight . Luckily the cheaper you go the lower the res .

    • Shouldn't be needed with Windows 7, you can scale the IU is a less bad fashion than XP, and scalled up UI/fonts on a higher DPI screen will actually be easier to read.

  • If you're not averse to buying used, I have an upgraded E320 (with i5 among other things) in excellent condition with very little use. Tell me if you're interested and I'll provide more details.

    • specs?
