Car Rental Help Tasmania

Hi all, given the COVID pandemic my Victoria travel plans have hit a roadblock.

Hoping to travel to Tasmania for 2 weeks in mid June but struggling to find car hire that isn’t silly money like ($300/day for a Getz). Any help seeking reasonable hire car would be appreciated :) Also looking into hire car from (Car Next Door) or similar.

Tassie has had a car rental shortage for a while now - some suggestions in the link. YMMV

  • They sold all the rental cars last year when there was no tourism so you're unlikely to get anything for a decent price. I paid $1k for 3 days over the xmas period for a Mitsubishi SUV.

  • Have fun walking around Hobart for 2 weeks

  • OP, what's your budget/expectation of a reasonable price?

  • Try Apex.

A quick quote shows mid size hatch for $133pd last 2 weeks of June with zero excess.

Always been my go to, they’re cheaper because they’re not in the airport and will pick you up in minivan/bus.

    Must be over 21 though.

  • We planned a two week trip to tassie to drive around and found it was cheaper to drive from Brisbane and even with adding a few days of travel either side, considering petrol, food budget, accommodation, and the ferry. However the ferry was booked out pretty far in advance too so we could only make it work on some dates.

  • Return trip Melbourne - Devonport for the car plus 2 people in a 2 berth cabin cabins runs at just under $1,000

  • Worth having a look at dual cab work utes, one of my mates recently hired one in Tassie cause it was about half the price of regular car hire.

    • any idea who they booked through ?

  • Wife & I just got back from 7 days in Hobart with car hire booked through Bargain. Standard SUV (Xtrail) cost us $625.00 total for unlimited kilometres.
My advice, search around for some discount code's which will bring the price down on your rental.
    Good luck in the search.

  • Drive Car Hire. When I went at the end of the year last year they were the cheapest by $500 and I got a commodore rather than a smaller car. Granted I didn't need a big car for one person but it was still cheaper lol

  • Yeah I went there for 2 days in March, had to uber to a car next door. Worked out to be about $140 for the weekend inc fuel + a $30 uber. Car hire was $600 not inc fuel.
