Can I Use Toslink (Optical Output) and TV Speakers at The Same Time?

Referring to a Sony x9000h but guess it is the same for all.

If I plug a optical cable into the toslink connection output, will the TV speakers cut out?

Also, if I turn the volume of the TV up or down using the remote, does this affect the volume being sent through the optical? Or is this a standard volume which you control at the end device, such as a receiver?

Cheers

will the TV speakers cut out?

    Yes

    • So if the optical is connected to a receiver, can I control the volume with the TV remote or only via the receiver?

      • Receiver only

        • Going off tangent, but if I have the TV connected to the receiver via optical, can I also plug in headphones to the receiver and have sound going to both the headphones and receiver speakers?

Basically, I want to use headphones and either the TV speakers or the receiver at the same time independently.

Thinking I might need one of these https://www.amazon.com.au/TERSELY-Digital-Converter-Control-…

          • @OldBugger: I have a Hisense tv with optical output going to Edifier Speakers, volume controlled by either Edifier or Apple tv remote, and headphone output going to some headphones.
The tv speakers are inactive due to the headphones being plugged in (you might have a setting to disable the tv speaker).
If I want to watch something late at night I mute the Edifier speakers, put the headphones on and control the volume either by the headphone controls or the tv remote.

            • @ACoz: Thanks for the reply.

Yes, when I plug the headphones into the TV jack, the sound cuts off and I can't change this in settings unfortunately.

          • @OldBugger: I bought one of these
            https://www.amazon.com.au/Avantree-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Rec…
Placed in line between the tv and sound bar (tv opt out to avantree in, then avantree opt out to sound bar in).
            Flexibility is good.
Can use any combination of tv speakers, sound bar or headphones. I mostly use wired headphones, but if you have low latency headphones then Bluetooth works well. Can even walk outside and still stay connected
Only annoyance is that to use wired, it needs to be set to wireless transmission mode first then switched to wired mode after tv (& the avantree) is powered on. Avantree is USB powered from tv if a port is available
            .

This is not true. I have this exact TV and connected to an AV receiver by optical cable. I can still independently turn the TV's speakers up and down, separate to the Hi Fi setup. If my GF is sleeping I turn the AV reciever off and just use the TV's speakers.

      • Ah thanks. Makes sense

    • I doubt this is true. The optical link has no idea if something is plugged into it or not.

The optical is just an output on my TV (Samsung), independent of the TV's speakers and volume. So both operate at the same time and volume on the optical output is controlled by the device connected to it.

    • TV speakers still work.

  • You may need to look at the choice of Audio output on your TV Audio setting
My parents Samsung ANNOUNCES OPTICAL when I adjust the TV volume as its adjusting the Samsung Sound bar volume
