Faulty TV Can I get a refund ???

Hi there, I know there are a lot of well informed people in this forum so I am hoping you can help.

Purchased a Samsung 59inch series 8 tv from Domayne in JAN on Interest free terms
Within a day I realised it BUZZED
I returned it and got another
Same , buzz
They said they will order another from Samsung and let me know when it comes in.
I waited 2 weeks and now they say Samsung will not be selling the Series 8 plasma until futher notice, WTF and PS What Buzz am I refering too ??? lmao

Domayne have given two options ,Get a different TV or Try their Last Samsung 59inch in stock ?

Can I ask for a REFUND even though its on Interest Free terms????

Cheers

  • It doesn't matter if you paid for it with blood and dog bones, if something is wrong with it you can get a refund. I assume the interest free deal was an in-store special? If so, I can't imagine they'd charge you to cancel it.

  • no doubt they will fight you tooth and nail over a refund especially since they went thru all the interest free paperwork

You are entitled to a refund.

The buzzing appears to be a common feature of Samsung plasmas. I have a 50" bought 3 or 4 years ago with a high pitch buzz. Used to bother me in my old house as it was put in front of a corner where the buzzing coming out of the back was amplified. A simple pillow or something dampening behind the tv and it was not noticeable. Fortunately in my new place the buzzing is dispersed so I don't hear anything.

    • Be careful with fire hazard putting pillows or similar items behind TVs.

      • Yes, true. Sorry, I didn't mean rest it against the TV. Anywhere in between the wall and the tv is better. Curtains seem to work too.

        • Yep, any fabric or soft item between a sound source and any hard surfaces it can reflect off will dampen that kind of noise.

        • when I got my Panasonic it had high pitch buzz but after a month it went away, I'm glad I did not try to return it. A surround sound system can help too.

  • The only issue you might have with regard to a refund is if you bought something else in the same transaction that was not enough for the minimum spend that was specified in the T & C's of the promotion.

    • OK, I bought a a cabinet and Sony Ipod dock , they totalled more than the minimum
I'll go down and see them during the week to sort it out
I just feel I wanted TV A and I should not have to settle for TV B

I think I have been paitent and fair, A new TV should work out of the BOX , I should not have to wait for it to be repaired. Give me one that WORKS or give me my money back

Anyway I'll see how I go

      Thanks for the replies

Just a note to you guys… (Used to fix TVs.) Buzzing is usually due to a component not being mounted securely - either by poor design, or laziness at the factory. In old style TVs it was the LOPT (line output transformer). If you know someone electrically minded, they can probably pull the back cover off, find the buzzing part and smear some RTV (radio-TV) silicon from the part to the circuit board, etc. - to get rid of the vibration.

    • LOPT buzz was a common source in the CRT days.. can be more sources these days and prevalent in plasmas for some reason. Was a lot of complaints with Panasonic plasmas.

Get your cash back and go for a 100hz lcd/led with a 3 yr warranty.

      • I was thinking more of those who can't take them back, but yeah, I agree.

  • I just feel I wanted TV A and I should not have to settle for TV B

    Exactly

  • Thanks for the relies fellas
I'll be seeing them tonite or tomorrow
    see how I go????

  • Well I had no luck initially.
Then contacted ACCC and Dept of Fair Trading, They said I was entitled to a refund
but both were unable to address the Finance argument the sales person made.
I spoke with GO mastercard and they said IF i were entitled to a refund then
they should just put the money back onto my account
So went in Friday and found the manager, and he just went ahead and arranged the refund.
Just got to get the TV picked up on 23rd and go in after that to get the paperwork sorted
    Thanks for the advice guys

  • Plasma, ah yes, Europe are discussing banning plasma tv or plasma screens, pioneer stopped making them.

Plasma screens run hot, use really big amounts of electricity, outrageous amounts, and are supposed to last maybe half as long as LCD or LED screens

Plasma screens in australia may or may not comply with C-Tick requirements.

And they radiate heaps of spurious radio frequency energy that interferes with various types of radio receivers.

Maybe australia is being used as a dumping ground again.

    • your post smells of fud. got an agenda?

the only reason why pioneer stopped making them was because they were undercut by other manufacturers and couldn't compete. sadly the tv part of their business was bleeding and was sold to panasonic.

yes plasma screens run hot, but so does my dell 3007wfp lcd monitor. it runs VERY hot, but that's normal. when they first came out, plasma life spans were atrocious, but new screens have manufacturers' quote of over 100,00 hours which is around 60 years of viewing if you watch four hours a day.

about the radiation, the fda (usa regulatory body) does not think plasma tvs are a risk. microwaves, which also emit radiation, are also approved. if you want to stick your face next to the tv for six hours a day, well, that'd be a different story.

  • Saw the title and knew it was Samsung… :-(

Grog>> Got a new panasonic plasma recently (replacement for one that died). One thing I noticed was that it runs ice cool compared to the 3.5 y/o one it replaced… no more plasma room heating effect. The power consumption "quoted" is a lot lower than the earlier models also.

Regardless of this even though plasmas are dirt cheap I would spend the extra and get a decent lcd, they just seem better to watch IMO. LG are the go with lcd.
