My Melbourne Ozbargainers...

Hey Bargainers,

I need your help. I'm coming down to Melbourne next week and will be there for Valentines day. I'm hoping you can recommend me a flower shop, cake shops, and restaurant. I'm all ears, so please any opinion counts. Oh and they must deliver to CBD.

No real budget to play with, say $200 for flowers; cake well she likes cheesecake but somewhere nice an authentic. What's your best cake shops in the cbd? As for restaurant well, she likes just Australian or Italian (in other words, steak and pasta) not really too fussy, just somewhere nice.

Thank you in advance.

Petey

  • cupcake bakery on the corner of elizabeth and flinders lane

  • There is a high end steak place called Rockpool in Crown. It is a very nice dining/service place, but the food (can be) basic steak with vegetable sides. Not usually considered a 'bargain' though.

  • Thanks guys, It's not really bargain hunting, although I am looking for a good deal. I'd even appreciate places where you wouldn't go and why. I'm open to any opinion because obviously I don't live in Melbourne and I guess the locals know it best.

IMO, LePetit Gateau is probably the best 'cake' shop in the CBD.
    Open only during office hours

They do delivery as well, at a fee.

I think the city is ugly but damn you guys have some good shops. Go to Brisbane and it's like 'The Cheesecake Shop?'…'Hogs breath cafe' etc…

  • Bluestone is a good steak place.

Its a good place to have your steak blue.

they have a valentine days special, but it might blow your $200 out

  • Hi…..If you like steak/ to be different and special you should try shousumiyaki.com.au (melb city)
It's one of my favorite restaurants: Beautiful wagu (Japanese bbq cooking at your table), Really nice decor/classy
    Dinner price: aprox $35+ pp
    Lunch price: aprox $12+ pp
And usually they give u a small valentine's gift if you have their set menu (but you need to contact them to confirm)
    Have fun in melb

  • Eaten at quite a few establishments in Melbourne. A few I'd recommend are Papa Goose (Modern british), Movida (tapas). A good place that does a decent steak is Universal pizza house but its decor is probably a bit lacking for something like a Valentine's day dinner.

I'll add more once I think of more

  • I'm assuming you can get flowers delivered from pretty much any Interflora type of shop to the CBD. The only flower shop I know of that's in the CBD where you could pick up a bunch yourself is at the Melbourne Town Hall, corner of Swanston and Little Collins Sts. http://www.flowersroundthehours.com.au/ They also deliver, according to their website.

I have no idea of price, though there always seems to be a steady trade of people on dates buying bunches of flowers so that could be an option. The advantage of delivery though is you can organise it in advance so you're not left standing at a stall containing three wilted geraniums because everyone else in Melbourne bought out their stock of roses. A friend of mine ordered flowers from a florist in Carlton a few years back and collected them on Valentine's Day evening as he went to see his lass. There were apparently bugger all flowers left and a sad guy faced with taking home carnations was desperately trying to buy the bunch of flowers off my friend. It would have turned him a profit too, but he rejected the offer. Pfft. Not an OzBargainer. :-)

    • how much profit is worth getting some seCks at the end of the night?

Just passed a new florist that open at the corner of Latrobe and Swanston street. beside the snag joint
