Want to buy a desktop today and can't decide between Dell XPS and Alienware R10

Unfortunately I don't know much about computers. I built a gaming desktop in 2012 and haven't bothered keeping up since then. Looking to buy a new computer now for work & light gaming and was thinking between the following 2

    Dell

    • I know people say avoid Dell but I've only had good experiences using the for work laptops (10+ years now)…

      • I wish you were right but I just returned two new XPS13's due to different display issues (hardware). So disappointing even though Dell was good on the refund/replacement.

No real specs on the SSD or HDD.

Watch dual V single channel memory as single will be slower, but you can add some later. Memory seems a bit slow for a gaming PC.

Both no trouble computing. R10 if you want to customise a bit, XPS if you want to leave it. Used XPS desktop for work, had zero issues.

    • Cheers I have very little desire to customise & the XPS is also $500 cheaper…

Both have the issue of Proprietary parts but the Alienware has twice the wattage PSU so at least upgrading the GPU shouln't be an issue
The XPS is going to have the crap CPU cooler since the CPU is the non-K variant. You'll want to upgrade it to a Noctura nh-u9s to stop it thermal throttling. It can be had for about $80 from newegg
The Alienware has single channel memory which will hurt performance quite significantly, if you go with it you'll want to factor in the cost of another RAM module.

    • Thank you for the detailed response. If the thermal throttling is going to be an issue I reckon I'll go for the Alienware since I don;t want to muck around with removing thermal paste and voiding warranty

Here's a review from both systems (different specs but results will be more or less the same) Edit: The Alienware in the review has low specs, don't compare the performance. The general comments about design and cooling will be relevant to the Alienware you're looking at

        XPS
        Alienware R10

There's also the XPS follow up video where he tests different coolers

        • Cheers I watched both. So the Alienware I selected doesn't seem that bad with the exception of the RAM, which is easy to upgrade.

Was hoping there was an option to configure within Dell checkout but couldn't see anything.

@Trippelsewe: It looks like you get the Alienware closer to the XPS pricing with coupons see the deal here

            • @FireRunner: And you've saved me a few hundred dollars! If you send me your PayId via pm I'll flick a pineapple your way
