No $500 gift card plan for <$60 (with port in credit scam), no buy~

    • +11

depends..this is arguably a cheaper deal if you were already in the market for a new phone.
Hypothetically you are after the iPhone 12 Pro.

      (1699-900)+((99-10)*12) = $1867

      vs.

      ((1699-500)+((69-10)*12) = $1907

      • Why 99-10?

        • +6

JB usually give you $10 port-in credit at time of sale…if they don't offer it, just ask nicely. It's literally a checkbox in the application to apply.

          • @ExtraSalt: Cool thanks for that!

          • @ExtraSalt: Are you sure this is still the case? I was told by a JB rep the other day that both the gift card and the port-in credit are ultimately set by Telstra.

            • @bozbargain: oh how recent is this? i wouldn't think the GC amount is set by Telstra as it's given by a 3rd party, JB Hifi in JB Hifi "currency". the last plan i signed up was for my wife March 10th and it was applied. We discussed it and they left it off the order when they sent it so i went back in-store the next day and the bloke logged in and literally checked 1 box….in and out within 5mins (….after waiting for somebody to serve me for 10mins).

              • @ExtraSalt: A few weeks ago. Good to know re your experience. Will definitely try it, I need a new plan within the next few weeks.

            • @bozbargain: I was able to get $20 off last deal, JB told me that I wouldn't be able to get any port-in credit

              • @JimmyJohnson: Awesome how'd you manage this?

                • @donnytuco: Got lucky with who you speak to on live chat;

if you need more info feel free to DM me

              • @JimmyJohnson: @JimmyJohnson $20 off on $99 plan?

                • @emperor: Yes, $79/month now

                  • @JimmyJohnson: Wow, I need this plan. How did you manage to get that? Did you just talk to the guys at JB store and they gave you further $20 off?

                  • @JimmyJohnson: Honestly made an account for this, but i'm also wondering how you got $20 off the $99 plan?
I dont see a live chat option on jb hifi

                    • @jaeksa: Telstra live chat, JB refused to give me any discount.

                      • @JimmyJohnson: So did you simply just for a discount?

                        • @OhNoUShiz: Replying to myself. I went to Telstra chat. Asked politely if they can apply any discount. Csr gave me $10 off for 6 months. I didn’t push further.

                          • @OhNoUShiz: I am in chat with Telstra since last one hour and the rep is telling me no extra discount now as it was available only for old plans

                            • @emperor: My plan was home internet plan from the jb hi deal last month came with the 5G modem.

My chat was pretty quick and fast. Csr simply applied the discount and I have received an updated plan that shows $59 per month now. It didn’t state only for 6 months. Shall see how it goes.

                          • @OhNoUShiz: I was only offered 6 months before aswell, I pushed and got more

          • @ExtraSalt: No port in credit available now. Just been to Broadway JB in Sydney

  • Telstra. 5G?

    • +1

Yeah 5G in all its glory.

  • This is pretty good if one is able to sell phone at good price.

  • Only if I really need that much of data plan.

  • -3

Just signed up to this less than a month ago but with just $800, is there a chance JB will credit back the $100 difference?

    • +5

      Nope

  • +6

    Good deal for me.

Am close to upgrading my wife to the S21. Considering i generally take advantage of the gift card deals. i justify this deal the following way.

    $99 per month for 12 months = $1188

$1188-$900 off of a phone i was going to buy anyway = $288 for the plan itself

$288/12= $24 per month for telstra 5g and 150gb data. Not bad.

    • +1

      JB currently has the s21 5G 128GB for $0 up front. $99 plan. https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/jb-mobile-instore

      • It says minimum $118
Ofcourse its a typo but wondering how it could be useful

    • Can you leave the plan after the first year tho?

      • yeah it's a 12month plan. You could technically port over to your cheapest non-telstra/boost plan for a few days (to a month) and then sign up to the next $69/m $500GC JB plan thereafter

        • oh damn

          • @Lance Miranda: gets even juicier if you worked from home due to COVID without a genuine work phone so you can claim 5/7 days a week as a work expense…In my case all last year i was WFH with my direct line call-forwarded to my personal mobile.

        • Just note that porting is often a disaster with Telstra.

          • @DingoBlue: true…in my case, i'm more than happy to hop onto Optus at the end of my term for as long as needed. Better coverage and speed where i live but a $59/m $500GC is too good to refuse lol

            • @ExtraSalt: Just get a prepaid SIM to try out Telstra in your area.

              • @Richardc: na I'm on Telstra atm. gone in-store and swapped out 3 sim cards across 2 phones and still pretty average to below average.

          • @DingoBlue: Really? Haven’t heard of any problems porting into Telstra myself. Even if there would be a problem, Telstra has arguably the biggest support team out of all telcos to fix it.

    • That’s an ozbargain if I’ve ever seen one

    • +3

      There's a 12*$99 S21 deal with zero upfront. Why pay more? ;)

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/jb-mobile-instore

      • Keep in mind on eBay you can buy brand new ones for between $850-$950. The full price is just that, a misleading RRP

    • You are upgrading your wife??

      • Next gen is always better than current gen.

    • That's how you HAVE to look at it, otherwise you justify paying absurd prices for phone coverage just to get a "cheap phone"

  • +9

    Instore only.

No good if your in Victoria :(

  • I’m about to run out of contract. Could I finish my contract, port my number away and then sign up to this?

    • Yes but you might need to stay ported out for 30 days

    • Officially you’d need a month in between.

    • Cheers thank you!

    • No need to port out. Sign up a new service with JB (so your Telstra account will show two mobile numbers).

Then go to Telstra, ask to cancel the old plan and merge the number on that plan over to the new JB plan.

Did this in April, and confirmed working by others.

      • Technically the deal coupon says when you switch over to Telstra.

So is the deal even available with a new number.

And when you say go to Telstra, do u mean chat or actual store?

        • +1

Yes. It’s for port in and new customers. Always has been, it’s just not usually stated because most people have a mobile service with someone.

Their signs only have limited space in the shops so they usually write ‘Port-In’. Speak to someone from JB and you’ll find it’s for new sign ups too :)

I did it physically in store. It’s easier that way IMO as chat seems to have mixed results when it comes to everything from waiving ETC, to getting plan discounts etc, really depends who you get on the day and what sort of mood they’re in lol.

Also when you’re in store, they might be reluctant to do it in any case. Trust me it can be done. Just tell them you want to cancel the old service and merge the old number to the new service. They might go on about it being a JB service and what but just push the issue and say you’ve either done it before or it can be done. The girl I had last time had either not done it before or kinda implied she wasn’t allowed to do it. Regardless all I said was I’ve had it done before here and she said she’d give it a try. Walked out 5 minutes later with the job done.

          • @Pelicannn: They don't like to port a number in then disconnect as it can be seen as being better for them. Just say in store its for a family member or someone else that needs another number or say you want a spare phone number then go on live chat and get them to change it around. Jb shouldn't question this

  • what are cancellation charges? do ETC includes the return of $900 GC as well?

    • +3

The $99 plan includes a "Maximum Voucher Reimbursement Cancellation Fee" of $500. This is in addition to the ETC.

  • Is this deal any good with SS S21 Ultra or any best android phone at the moment? Anyone advises?

  • Just got iPhone 12 mini from Goodguys just before lockdown! This is better deal

  • +1

Seeing a few comments about porting out and back in for deals like this. This option is also available for those who are unaware.

  • Hey guys

    Got a dilemma..

I've got a 36 month contract with Telstra and I'm about half way through it with an S10. To pay it out will cost me $700 or so. Should I pay it out and then join this plan and sell my S10 for $200 or so which will offset some of it? I also want to keep my old number so I'll have to transfer it across to the new plan. I'm looking at the JB $99 per month plan with a discount on the phone cost.

I'm looking at getting an S20 (I like it because you can use an SD card) or as S21 which is newer but doesn't allow for SD cards..

What are your thoughts on what is a better phone ? And should I just stick with my S10 contract or move to a new plan with a new phone and pay out the old contract? I'll be out of pocket as I need to pay out my old contract but I'll have a newer phone I guess and it looks like a pretty good deal from JB.

    • +12

Not sure but in the future please stop signing 36 month contracts, it gives me anxiety just reading about it

      • +1

Never sign a 36 month contract. You can get car loans for this amount of time. There's some perspective.
BOT, sounds like a good deal, but I'd never sign into any contract anymore. Too many good alternatives that allow you to buy a phone outright and get a prepaid plan for less. But YMMV.

  • +2

Can we use the $900 credit to buy a tab or it has to be a mobile?

    • keen to know this too. already have way more phones than the number of adults in the household…. however can make use of one more IPad.

      • Sounds like you should wait for the next $500 GC on the $69 plan, then you can buy your iPad that way.

  • Just ported out of my 12m JB HIFI contract to boost prepaid yesterday.. could I port in and keep my number? or does the 30 day apply?

    • Can generally port back in within half an hour for these plans without an issue, I have several times.

    • Not from Boost to Telstra as Boost uses Telstra network and Boost customers are not eligible for this deal. You will first need to port away from Boost to Optus/Amaysim/Vodafone etc and then subscribe to this deal and port to Telstra.

    • Just sign up a new service with Telstra (get new number)

Then port your boost number over to new Telstra plan.

  • +2

Do they give you the $900 phone voucher? What's the validity of the voucher? or do we have to use it on the spot?

    • You choose a phone when you sign up I believe

    • +1

Yes you have to use the gift card on the spot for this particular transaction according to my previous experience at 2 different stores. You are free to use more gift cards but not less.

      • What if the phone is less than $900? Can you use the remaining balance for something else?

        • Probably forfeited.

  • silly question but would the 150 GB plan with telstra directly be any better or faster?

I know JB hifi are selling telstra plans but wasnt sure if Telstra direct customers get access to a faster part of the network??

    • They get priority on the network

      • +1

The contract is from Telstra, and I've got 400mb/s on 5g outdoor.

    • No, I used to be on Telstra and changed to a JB plan. Absolutely no difference in speed or network availability in my area. Speedtest was within a couple Mb/s of each test before and after.

      • thank you kindly

    • The JB plan is a Telstra contract on the Telstra systems. You'll experience no difference in mobile reception to a contract which was signed directly through Telstra.

  • -1

Do they ever have a port in bonus for Optus. Teltras network doesn't work taking the T4 train line to the eastern subs. The rainy days I take the trains. I'll get reception to Tempe then nothing till Kings Cross.
More interested in getting the gift card to use for PS5.

  • To be honest, iPhone 12 series with 5G is so much better than I thought. Network speed is super fast within 5G & 4G areas, and it has much stronger signal than previous iPhone series that I even have signal in underground parking areas.
This deal is great, and the bargain can be greater if JB is willing to price match iPhone with Officework.

  • I just saw Telstra is offering $200 off iphone 12 deal with a plan. It seems that you can check out with just the phone by selecting outright without the plan.

I am not looking to buy iphone 12 but I thought if anyone is keen can try to proceed on in doing the credit check.

    • Sounds like a good loophole esp if you plan to buy outright via Telstra.

Given we’d all want to use the $900 voucher to buy one @ JB, I can’t see any chance that the CSR will accept the $200 off as a price match, given the condition of the Telstra deal is that it’s purchased with an eligible plan (JB Telstra plans are seperate offerings).
I see where you’re coming from though and would suggest anyone who’s considering buying an iPhone 12 tomorrow to attempt it and see if they have any luck.

In anyone does get lucky (no pun intended), feel free to share. It’ll defs push me over the edge to follow through on this deal myself.

  • -4

$900 off prices that are jacked by $1000

    • The iPhone 4 32GB cost $999 outright back in 2010, which is around $1,206 after accounting for inflation today (source: RBA).

      The iPhone 12 Mini 64GB costs $1199.

Exactly what is jacked by $1000? Seems like you just need to accept that’s what they cost and they clearly haven’t had a problem selling them for the past 10 years.

    • And for the Samsung fans, Galaxy S3 back in 2012 retailed at $899 ($1033 in 2020).

Galaxy S21 - $1099 from officeworks or less when on sale.

  • +2

Would be great if the gc can be used on 2 phones.

  • Can i use the $900 to get 2 phones ? 🤔🤔

  • Will I be able to add the Telstra international calling pack ($10) with this plan?

    • I signed with this plan last month. No, you can't add any international calling to it.

    • Yes you can
