Gsm 4g mobile desk phones for elderly - advice wanted

Thank you in anticipation.

My 94 y.o. mother-in-law has been moved from normal care to a dementia ward where rooms do not have phones.

A normal big buttoned simple elderly person mobile no longer is suitable for her. She forgets to hang up. Loses the phone. Forgets to charge it etc.

She needs something that that she grew up with. Pick up the handset. Dial the number then hang up to end the call.

I see that this type of phone is available and several others on ebay, Amazon etc. The one in the link seems very expensive in comparison to those on ebay etc.

Does anyone have any advice for me or experience with this situation please?

Cheers
Mark

  • Looking on ebay there are a number of these phones, but dont say if they are big button.

    This one does

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/264691097712?hash=item3da0d1a070…

However that looks very much like those that dont say big button, and are cheaper.

I guess you can email them and ask what size the keypad area is.

    Good luck

    • Thanks for your help. Big buttons would be a bonus. Her eyesight is surprisingly good. Something super uncomplicated would be perfect

you can also consider a 4G LTE modem with VoIP, VoLTE support and RJ11 connector, that way you can plug in whatever landline phone that works for her.

    • Even a rotary dial phone?

      • Yup, something like that -> https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/402318183723 + a pulse to digital converter would work or you may be able to find one that has a converter built-in

        • Wow I hadn't even thought of something like an alarm dialer. I wonder if they would work with the last version of home phone that telstra used to give out. Thanks for the link btw

Have a look at these ones, more affordable and look better https://oricom.com.au/product-category/products/oricom-care-…

    • This looks to be just a corded home phone, don't think they have a landline in the room.

    • Hey I like a few of those. Super simple. If they work with the alarm dialer suggested above I reckon that could be the perfect combination.

Should you take away the phone? Dementia makes people more vulnerable to scammers.

Just googled if there should be any concerns with having a phone… as your MIL is not at home but at nursing home. You may want to reconsider and maybe check with the nursing home staff/policy, before getting one. I assuming you may not have considered such factors yet.

    • Thanks for the tip. You are right. That would be a pain. She doesn't have access to her finances anymore but I wouldn't like her to get stressed as she is pretty with it 75% of the time.
