What SSD Would You Recommend for Music Production?

Essentially what I'm looking for is an external SSD to put my music samples in. My guess is that it should have fast read speed, since I probably mostly be using it for putting samples in, but I thought I'd ask for some suggestions!

Are you going to a) play the samples from the external SSD or b) transfer the samples to the PC/MAC/MIDI Device or c) use them to mix songs/etc via apps on the PC/MAC?

Depending on the answer depends on what SSD recommended as follows:
    a) Any SSD that has DRAM on it. I do not recommend a DRAM less SSD BTW.
    b) If you can afford a Samsung T7
    c) Depending on the app and how fast it needs to read the data it could be either the SSD from a) or b). If it's a low process then a) or if its a fast process then b).

Now comes the other option and it WILL be cheaper and will be fast enough for what you want for a) or c) and may bee option b) :
    - Samsung EVO microSD card and USB adapter as it's only about $20. Example is https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/624230

    • I don't understand how a) and c) are different? Essentially I'll be using the samples within a DAW and manipulate them, but I think that doesn't affect the SSD, since it'll all be happening on the main machine.

Do you have any suggestions for DRAM SSD?

I actually did get those microSDs, but unfortunately I think they're not big enough in terms of space.

  • The best price to performance is propably a 2tb nvme samsung evo, with an external enclosure like a Asus ROG Strix Arion M.2 NVMe RGB SSD Enclosure.

Also make sure you have a super fast usb on your motherboard if you want to get the maximum data transfers.

  • Internal, mx500 or EVO equivalent.

External doesn't matter, you'll be limited by your mobos usb3 transfer speeds.

If I was you, I'd consider this when searching:
    - Find an SSD with Dram
    - Find the cheapest per GB
    - If it's internal, but you want external, buy a casing.

Imo, honestly, don't over think it. Just buy what's within your budget. I use Ableton and booting opening project files doesn't really change that much compared to SSD > HDD. What does matter is big ass plugins like omnisphere or kontak libraries. I put the banks/samples/vsts on my ssd and then my project files on my HDD.
