Gerry is okay to keep millions for struggling businesses while having better than expected yearly results.
Honestly not paying gst on imports under 1k made no sense. The government was essentially incentivising people to buy from offshore, which is horrible for a country. It was just bad policy before this. If you're trying to argue something, you should argue they should have dropped gst on local sales under 1k.
But yeah the job keeper thing was insane. I don't get how that wasn't recovered. If I make a fallacious assumption on my tax during thy year, I need to settle it up at the end.
The reason why it wasn't for under $1k items is because it costs more to administer than the revenue it generates.
I did recall hearing that, but I don't recall it ever getting much credibility, and appeared to be retailers just pushing this line to get people on board with rallying against the change.

Singapore is doing the same, and again there is no talk about "cost of implementation". Realistically it should all be tracked in a system and remitted periodically - the exact same way local companies do.

This paper talks about the various models. It's noted that extending the previous model to low value items (under $1000) would significantly increase costs and create delays. It appears it's because it's all physical paperwork. The model they actually employed is different. They get the retailer to register for and collect GST, reduced the costs to make it viable, while acknowledging that smaller international businesses won't be paying GST.

But yeah all makes sense. They came up with a system that's workable, and I'm the main has the desired effect. Seems the obvious conclusion here is that it was right to implement. Didn't end up "costing more to administer" and stopped disadvantaging local spending.

All this rubbish to satisfy Gerry…. And in the end, it did very little to increase the price of overseas stuff really, and it's still significantly cheaper to buy most stuff overseas anyways lol.
It was a lobby group of businesses and unions, not just HN. Even the SDA (shoppies union) was part of it and one of the loudest voices. Both Labor and Liberals were on board with the change in principle. This was always going to happen once technology lowered the cost of administering GST on lower value items. OzBargainers may not like losing the loophole, but it was bad for Australian jobs and businesses by putting them at significant disadvantage.
Honestly for a lot of products I disagree.
If they aren't designed in Australia, manufactured in Australia, or owned by Australians why should I have to pay more because some Australian middle-man jackass wants to get in-between myself and the free market?
Australian businesses certainly don't seem to mind relying on imported labour (mining, farming, education) or sacrificing a Citizens job for a lower paying 457 visa workers (now TSS visas).
A lot of these guys want to have their cake and eat it too.
But god forbid I buy my mountaineering gear from the company and country of their origin.

I've had an issue with Doordash Gift cards bought through Shopback and unable to redeem. It's been more than 10 days and their response is crappy.
Bought some ebay giftcards before from shopback, was a painless and instant experience. Sounds like experiences are very varied
Agree. For me, Swap/eBay GCs from ShopBack have been smooth and instant (touch wood), cash back tracked within 24-48 hours. I rather them than the physical GCs bought from stores, hard to find high values when they are on sale, even 10% is not worth the effort and time, and several times had issues redeeming them.

I plan to build, and my best mates brother works at HN so I can already save alot. It'd be nice to stack with an extra 5-7% but I don't wanna drop and hold 10k of gift cards for 12 months.
Recommend never to hold that much in GCs for that length of time, for a start plenty of big name stores went bankrupt in the past, the GCs were useless. You can buy 5% off in the Shopback app when you actually need them. The extra 2% is not worth the risk or worry. Plus you are not tied to HN, there may be better savings in other stores when the time comes.

I had so many problems buying these last time. Tried to do it while at Harvey Norman and got charged on the credit card but got no gift cards so had to leave empty handed. Then had to deal with credit card companies and ShopBack. ShopBack really didn’t care either and I missed out on the higher percentage because of their rubbish system.
