Advice on Damaged LG 55 CX TV (New Demo)

Hi OzB.

I just picked up today a LG55 CX from a reputable retailer. It was the only one left (Demo model) so I got a pretty decent discount down to $2099. I was pretty disappointed in the service at the store and I felt they were careless when packaging it up, getting it off the shelf the worker picked it up in the corner creating a noticeable imprint on the screen. They then took it out the back to box it up which I wasn’t able to view.

When I finally got home I unpacked it and powered it on only to notice the entire top half of the panel is producing a line across the screen and is obviously damaged. I was extremely careful when assembling the stand and laid it on a cushion flat surface.

I’m going to take it back tomorrow but I’m worried they will say it was my fault because it was working in the store. I either didn’t notice the line while the demo was playing ( you can only really see it on dark images so it is a possibility)

What is the best way to go about this?

I would never consider getting a display demo model especially for OLED but it probably comes with a warranty or sort with it. So good news you either getting it repaired from LG or they just outright replace it with a brand new one.

    • These demo are on for like 24/7

Comes with warranty or it should, so you have nothing to worry about. Unless there is actual physical damage to the tv, in which case they will claim that damage was caused by you, which is the risk you take when buying a demo. You should of gone over the tv and made sure there was no damage before buying it.

It's very likely physical damage so warranty won't cover that. If they were rough at just grabbing the tv off the self I would imagine they were no more careful packaging it. Regardless it's not in the condition it was bought in surely that falls under consumer protection laws regardless of store terms and service their not above consumer law no matter what they try and say. Personally id take it back and expect nothing less of a refund or replacement.

  • The store is obliged to offer you a refund or replacement under consumer law.

Don't be surprised if a refund is the only offer, then they'll probably get a new replacement unit from LG to resell at full price.

If you want to take the risk to keep your dollar savings, you could try direct with LG for a warranty claim, but as pointed out, it's looks like physical damage and they may not be obliged to honour under warranty.

  • Thanks for all the replies!

Yeah I understand taking a demo model is risky but it has full warranty. After this I’m never doing it again

Will be heading in soon to try and return it

They returned it no questions asked!

Replacements were out of stock basically everywhere so they sold me the C1 for $2680. so bloody cheering.

  • Yeah, if they do claim you've physically damaged it just push back with the repackaging issue.
Easier to claim they inadequately packaged it.

You'd think that it'd be picked up on initial inspection at the store.
Still could claim as a defective panel potentially.
