Going to NZ for 3 Weeks, Best Camera?

Hi! Looking for advice. Going to NZ for three weeks, mostly the south island. For me this is a trip of a lifetime and I want to take some beautiful photos. Any advice on best camera to travel with? I'm not set on a budget, so anything upwards of $1000.

Thanks!

To be honest - I did NZ with my phone camera. Got some great photos - I figured get the shot with the camera and photoshop if required.

Phone cameras are ridiculous these days.

The best thing about camera phones is they automatically apply various enhancements to the photos they take. The photo you get won't be 100% accurate but it will look amazing without any effort on your behalf.

I shot a bunch of photos from my European trip in RAW on my Sony RX100. I barely ended up using them as they looked too plain for social media and I couldn't be bothered downloading them and then tweaking them in photoshop when my iPhone took perfectly acceptable photos from the same location. I did use a couple to blow up as 75cm canvas prints where I put the effort into tweaking the RAWs but I also printed an iPhone photo the same size and it looked fine too.

  • Have you short listed any? https://www.camerahouse.com.au/ give it a go.

I am travelling with Osmo Pocket to take short videos which I later edit/combined using DJI Mimo app to create my trip highlight video/s.

I have been very happy with it due to its size & ease of use.

The bulk of DSLR camera turned me off from taking it to travel, I have sold mine and travel with this tiny pocket camera everywhere.

And also, nothing's wrong with your mobile phone cameras as they are very good these days and you can easily do the edit and upload directly.

This has been my go to for my past few trips too. Osmo pocket is amazing for it's 4K shooting and stability and size, and I've left my DSLR at home and gone with mobile phone for taking photos.

Having less bulky and weighty items to carry around to enjoy the sights has been liberating :)

+1 for Osmo Pocket, especially with the various clips and attachments such as backpack strap clip to keep it accessible

    are u going skiing?
    white water rafting?
    camping
    hiking etc?
    lots of out door activities?

i ask cause u might need something more water proof and shock proof

    do u want vidoes?

maybe something like a go pro or dji action

if you are not doing those and wants scenery maybe u can think of a dslr or something more than your phone

what phone do you have, are you not happy with the shots?

  • also if you are from melb you might be in lockdown soon……..
flights from vic to nz have been placed on pause….

You need to give us some more information - how familiar are you with cameras? Do you shoot fully manual or automatic? Do you want to shoot videos too? What do you want to do with the photos when you're back home - just put on the web or get them printed?

I want to take some beautiful photos

An expensive camera doesn't mean beautiful photos.

Watch some YouTube videos on capture techniques and post processing and just take what ever camera you have.

    • post processing with MS Paint?

      • Yes. 4 bit or 8 bit bitmap.

Very broad question and many cameras will take good photos, but not many cameras may be good for you. Eg. DSLR vs compact DSLR vs point and shoot.

Even if you get a very good and expensive camera, unless you know how to use it or take a good photo, then the photos may not be good. Hence, possibly rely on other posters earlier advice about using a phone camera as it's the simplest way to get a decent photo. Some phones take stellar shots - as example, I have a 'very good' camera too but sometimes opt for phone shots simple because it's quicker to take.

Don't forget TRS on your way out of Australia.

    • And declaring the item on the way back in if over your threshold. Then lining up in a queue, then paying the GST back and copping a credit card surcharge.

Once you exceed your threshold, your forfeit it. So they don't deduct your threshold.

      • not sure u will be bring much back from new zealand
besides thick cut chips! buy me 10k worth pleasssssseeeeeee

  • Go Pro and edit

I would recommend Sony RX-100, compact and excellent for travelling, try to get older model to fit your $1000 budget !

My recommendation too. Can get a seconds on ebay for $969 (mark 6). Big downside is that still don't have usb c.

Mobile phone, we bought a mini DSLR to Europe in 2019 and barely used it.

I guess it depends on your phone model too!

  • Mobile phone, as others have said. And perhaps a selfie stick if you want to be in them and there's no one around to take a photo for you. Any flagship phone these days takes great photos. Why would you buy a stand alone camera for only one trip?

No offence, but unless you are already proficient with a "proper" camera and have a good/artistic eye, chances are you're not going to take anything more than your standard holiday photos anyway.

My retired dad has spent tens of thousands (of my inheritance šŸ˜‚) on cameras, equipment, lessons, trips specifically to take photos and still takes average photos (some blurry and he doesn't even notice). His success rate of good photos to bad/average photos is probably in the one to hundreds (I know it's subjective). When he asks if I like them and I say no and point out all the issues, he says "well I like them"…can't argue with that…
