This is what you ask after being a member for more than 1 year?

    • Interested in seeing how other people bargain

  • Anything specific you are trying to bargain?

    • nope, just in general for most of the retail stores

  • Remain calm at all times.
Be clear about what you want from the deal.
Be realistic, don't expect to get massive % off.
Look to see what deals other people are doing.
Ask if friends are interested in buying same thing, or other items from same store. Power in bulk buying.

    • May I add,
Don't believe in most the RRP

      • Other things to add :
        - Not sucked into things you dont need or can get from elsewhere cheaper
        - Be nice to the salesperson!

Are you referring about haggling? or just getting good deals in general?

    • imo be informed on what you're getting, what specs you want, and what the competitor prices are.
    • be realistic on price, service and warranty. If you're buying goods out of a shed in the ghetto, you probably won't be able to get a refund if its faulty.
    • just because it's on special, doesn't mean it is a good deal.
    • Sometimes you can double up on deals by forward planning. Sometime myer offer 5% off gift cards, you could buy a few then visit on a day when they've got a 30% off laptops sale, that way you're getting an awesome deal.
    • despite the complainers, whirlpool is actually a pretty good place to get many views on products/gadgets
    • haggling i'd say.

      excellent set of tips.

What do you think of using the faults of the item in the haggling process,
i.e highlighting them and asking for a lower price?

  • i got 20% off a product at OW recently (the old WD Live for $80, rather than $100).

i just talked to the guy for a while, was nice….asked questions about the model, and other models. then just said "can u give me a discount at all?"

    easy as pie :>

  • not sure if this is helpful but i would suggest if you have a choice between 2 stores then always pick up a store which gives you after sales price beat guarantee eg. The Good Guys etc..i have almost saves 1000$ by keeping an eye on after sales price drop off's..

  • If it's a high price item, say a decent TV for $2500, make sure you have 2 -3 places in your head where you can get it. Go to one, have a chat, get a price of say $2300, then say "I'll just go check with the boss (wife)". Then go to place 2 and tell them place one was going to do it for $2200 (cut $100 off yourself), they will then beat the price down to $2100, then again say "I'll just go check with the boss (wife). Then go to place 3 and say place 2 was going to do it for $2000. If any of them say "we'll match it", just tell them "well, if I wanted that price, I would've stayed at X and saved myself the hassle. I did this with a decent home theatre, and saved myself $1000. BUT, you have to be confident, and be prepared to walk out.

  • thanks for the tips everyone, will keep them in mind
