Anyone Here Works/Worked in a Radio Station?

I would really like to explore setting up a DAB station in Sydney, but the government guidelines are quite hard to understand. I'm comfortable with technical requirements and marketing side of it though.

If you've worked in the industry (or have knowledge about it) I'd love to pick your brains in exchange for a nice bottle of wine or a donation to a charity of your choice.

  • If you're not flush with a nice crypto payout, you're going to be disappointed. I'd get in touch with a community radio station (such as 2SER) and you can make that donation to them.

  • You can't just set up a station. You'll need a license so will have to go through ACMA. You'll also need infrastructure to actually create the content and broadcast it. The broadcasting side is the expensive one.

FYI there are only 3 actual RF channels that broadcast DAB in Sydney.
    1 has ABC and SBS
2 have the commercials and community stations.

Your best bet is to get a community broadcast license and contact the community dab joint venture because they all share the same hardware at the transmission site.
I think you're underestimating the data links and licensing fees required.

    • I did know there's a license involved, was hoping I can sublease some bandwidth from an existing station. You're correct, I'm probably underestimating the fees :(

      • The community stations aren't using much bandwidth as it is. Don't think there's much wriggle room there unless one drops off.

  • Also, the community DAB JV might not even have room on their allocation for more stations.

    • True, and community DABs need to run as a non-profit too

  • my buddy kyle works in radio.

  • Thank you everyone, no crypto payout here so I better look for something else.
