Is this an official Apple cable or just some cheap knock off that may or in my experience may not work?

    • +18

Official cable for 49c? Come on

      • +5

From my experience, cheap knock off cables are more durable than the Apple ones. The stupid cable on the official Apple cables is too rubbery and eventually comes off and ruins the wiring.

        • +4

I totally agree! I went through my apple official cables in the first months, now I've got nothing but these knockoffs doing a darn good job!

        • +6

I find cheap knock off cables harder to insert than official Apple cables.

        • +1

the knock offs are a few mills larger than the original.
which makes them difficult to use with case protector on.

        • +1

I've bought some fake cables thinking to myself its just wire how different could it be from the genuine ones? Difference was definitely noticeable; fake ones charged my iPhone around 2 times slower.

    • +1

I have received a couple of these cheap ones with other crap from COTD.
I have no been able to insert any into my phone, and they have been stupidly tough to get into the other one we have,

      • +1

All these cheap cable works perfectly for me. I find that the cable is pretty durable.

  • +1

    good as spares

  • Would this damage the battery of the phone? That's the only concern I got.

    • I asked a question and i got negged :O

      • +7

Get used to it, the know it all's will neg you often. Glad you asked the question as it was on my mind, its not stupid as the know it all's think but me being new to an iphone or i device and I wanted clarification before I could possibly damage an expensive item. Some people here need to appreciate a genuine question when it is asked and simply answer it or ignore it.

    • -6

Yes, it might damage the battery if you wound it around very very VERY tightly. Then bashed both of them with a hammer. Maybe.

      [What a silly question]

    • -2

Do you know that some of the poorly build usb chargers will dmg batteries? How is that silly.

      • +9

But this is not a charger, it is a cable. You connect it to your computer, or to a charger if you have one.

And it's for an iPhone. It is impossible to damage the iPhone battery with a charger because the phone manages the charge rates, etc.

Bottom line is - It either charges, or it doesn't.

        • +3

          by 9 seconds…. curse you!

      • +4

Maxhu, I'm not endorsing anything but I think the cable will be absolutely fine. I'm much more careful about the actual USB chargers I buy as they can send whatever current down the cable they want but the cable itself shouldn't do anything funky!

        • Thanks, thats what I wanted to know because when I plug my iphone to my docking it charges much quicker and warmer. I dont know why llama feel offended when I just asked something.

        • +1

I agree with ewan_m. Its only a cable, which actually comes in quite handy at work as I can just leave it attached to my work PC permanently.

        • +2

The chargers for iPhone won't work if they don't have the correct voltages on the 2 x USB data pins that tell the iPhone what current to draw from the charger. There are 2 steps - 500mA and 1000mA.

If the charger circuit gets that wrong, the phone may draw too much and cause the charger to freak out (over-current). Most commonly, they simply will not charge at all, or cycle - I got one from eBay a few weeks ago that does that.

Or, if the special voltages are not present at all, then the phone will not charge at all.

        • Yes, I am going to get it as a spare one at my office.

        • +1

when I plug my iphone to my docking it charges much quicker and warmer.

That is because your dock is connected to an Apple (or other brand) charger that provides 1000mA. When you plug into a computer's USB port, you only get 500mA so the charge rate is half (hence takes twice as long to charge).

I dont know why llama feel offended when I just asked something.

Not offended at all. Sorry if I sounded blunt - it came across as a silly question because this is not a charger, so it cannot do any damage.

        • -4

llama, do you think I would ask a question if I could answer like you did myself? Also for the record, I have some random cheap usb cables that would make my external harddrives switch on/off sometimes. I am pretty sure if this happens it will shorten the lifespan of the battery. Hence, I asked.

        • +1

Maxhu - yeah, a bad cable would do what you say re: poor connection, but a hard drive doesn't have a battery in it.

I'm trying to educate you, not argue with you. :-)

      • +1

re: poor connection, but a hard drive doesn't have a battery in it.

I guess I didnt know about that. I think you totally got my point. ^_^

    • +1

It will most probably damage the socket. I bought some cheap knockoffs which looks exactly like the originals. I find it difficult to plug it in. Some can only be plugged in halfway.

  • +1

    Maximum quantity = 1
    Boooo

    • What!… you were planning to buy in bulk and sell retail

      • +2

Hah, I think more like they are really handy to have lying around.

I currently have about 5 as our house has 2 iphones which need to be plugged in in either the bedroom, the loungeroom or at work.

      • +1

I was hoping to buy 20 or so and chuck one on the desk of every member of my team. :(

  • +4

A lot of effort for 1, signing up and having to enter credit card info… =\

    • +1

      agreed

  • +4

I can't believe this is a direct copy website of cotd:

    proof:
    https://www.awesomebargains.com.au/shipping_table.php?pID=44

    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/shipping_table.php?pID=46621

even the website page name is the same lol

    • +2

Haha.. yeah noticed that! Their web developer prob'ly copied the whole script: Ctrl A —> Ctrl C —> Ctrl V… Tadaaaaaan…We have a shipping table ready!

    • +3

      it even references COTD's style-sheet: <link href="css/cotd.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> is in the source of Awesome Bargains

      • That is brilliant.

    • +3

      +1 for investigation work!

  • +1

DX's cheapest cables are $1.50 for comparison.

But as above, I'd want to get 2 or 3 to go through the hassle of signing up to a new site.

  • +4

Unfortunately no paypal.. for 50c its not worth risking your credit card details

    • +1

If they were using paypal, with the 2.4% + 30c fee it would take over 60% of the money they were making. These guys have been on OzBargain before… they're reputable enough. Search them up.

  • +1

No mention of cable length. The last time I got a cheapo it came with cable length of approx 10cm. Still works but may not suit everybody's needs.

    • +1

      exactly! it was smalllllllllllllllllllllll

  • +1

only 1(maximum order) for $0.49????? so much hassle?????

and if I remember correctly, previously few companies are giving away free(with free shipping) for this sort of promotion(promoting their company)!

  • +2

Dno - good deal, but too much effort for me + no paypal. I'd rather spend my 50 cents on those awesome toothpaste squeezers! BEST BUY EVER! (Meritline :]!)

  • +1

    got one.

  • +1

Just got one .. Never had problems with thembefore …:)

  • +1

    good find

  • +1

word of warning - they are more than likely going to be 5cm in length.

    • +1

yeah I recently had the free one that was posted here a few weeks arrive and it is very short. It's ok when you use it to connect to a car charger located inside a centre console.

  • +1

I bought 15 cheapie USB iPhone cables on Ebay for $15.

They lasted one day (each) before the internal wires became exposed at each end-connector.

My original Apple ones are still going strong years later.

    • +1

      Biggest bargain hunter failure ever.

  • +1

Its 100cm long, you can click on the product for more detailed specs, we have about 50 left, they work fine, we dont use/like paypal. I think thats everything…back to packing. Happy weekend!

  • +1

I've had mixed experiences with cheap iPhone cables…some work for a week, some are more reliable than official Apple cables and some don't work at all. For 49c it's a deal if you need a cable! Just don't be upset if it doesn't work :)

    • +1

Don't get upset if it damages your socket.

  • +1

    Up to .99 cents. Inflation??

  • +1

    99 cents - not 49 cents >"<

    • +1

      Bait and switch… No deal!

      • +1

You do know that bait and switch requires them to persuade you to buy a 'different' product from them, hence the 'switch'?

  • +1

Yip, price has go up, no sale for me.

  • -1

    99c ?!

  • -1

WTF? price gone up and no more free ship…

  • +1

25 hrs to go but price is 99c

  • +1

No need to 'neg' though peeps, we are just a bit too late.

  • +1

All the fuss to sign up with another online shop to save 51c.
