hard to ignore Dell monitor deals :(
    got 3 already

  • Argh what payment methods do they do?

  • Had been debating getting another one of these for about a week… that extra 5% since this morning has done the trick! Thanks

  • VA, AMD FreeSync 4K 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz / 99% sRGB and 90% DCI-P3

Does Dell make an IPS version? The above colour gamut is usually on IPS panels.

    • The 27 inch version is an IPS

S2721QS OR S2721Q (no adjustable stand)

      • Yes, I was thinking of getting a 32" to help with the eyes looking at menu items when photo and video editing.

    • +3

I have this, disappointed in the picture quality really compared to my other monitors its not crisp. f you want a better quality image the ultrasharp model might be what youre after however has hardly been discounted ..

      • I have the 27 inch and I love it. Granted I'm only using it for the home office and am only using it to read test and PowerPoints all day

        • +7

I have the 32 inch VA panel S3221QS which this post is about.

Its adequate though poor as a programming screen, because the text is not sharp. You would think the text would be sharp because of the pixel density, but it's not. This bugged me badly as the monitor it replaced was sharp and I could make the text smaller yet see it comfortably, so even though the pixel density is high on S3221QS it's not good.

It's not just text either as due to the fuzziness I did side by side comparisons of the same images on my other monitors this dell lost detail in parts of the images.

However it is cheap and functional if you're not too demanding of picture quality - I just want post this so potential purchases can be aware of the reason why it's cheap.

          • +5

@bono: I have the exact same model, the text are sharp as hell. (I have a Mac mini M1, so no issue driving 60Hz 4k)

Maybe worth checking your setting, the cable and port that you use. Maybe the resolution is not at 4k (3840 x 2160). I have this issue with my work laptop (windows machine), bloody annoying … the graphic card is so shxt that it can't output 4k 60hz unless I only use one screen and the right port with right adaptor (e.g. Thunderbolt 3 port instead of USB3 with Thunderbolt 3 hub that support HDMI 4k at 60hz)

          • @bono: Are the other monitors 4K as well?

I was wondering as there are a number of Windows text scaling issues and even monitor settings which can cause this sort of behaviour.

            • @Grok: I totally agreed with you. that's what I experienced with Windows laptop. So bloody hard for it to work well with a 4k monitor.

          • +2

@bono: Thanks for suggestions, I tried a lot of things, and covered them in a previous thread won't go through it all again. Tried resolutions, dp vs hdmi, scaling, clearytype, refresh rates, monitor settings via the osd, one or two other things i forgot. I've just put it in the category of bearing with it until I get something seriously better, and it's just one of 4 desktop monitors I use at present anyway.

To those that find it crisp, possibly there's physical variation and I got a bad one from the factory but it's also possible that you've not experienced working on high quality monitors and don't have to stare at walls of text all day fitting as much detail on the screen as possible thus have different expectations of clarity.

Keep in mind Dell's next model up in picture quality (not refresh rate) in the 32 inch model is the 'ultrasharp' 32 and that's about $1500 on the sale now, so 4 times the price.

            • @bono: try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hckJLhdrKfw&ab_channel=Ninja…

EDIT: it doesnt work well with multiple monitors.

            • -1

@bono: If you're a programmer, then you're most likely to be on a Mac.
Use the free SwitchResX app for Mac to change your resolution to 4K 60Hz and you're golden.

              • @i0k-0RU2zd10c: Windows ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I focus on essential infrastructure instead of ux focused web content hence no mac.

I think mac developers are primarily web only developers actually in the minority, but they are the vocal set who writes blogs etc all the time ;) Anyway just wanted to say that mac programmers are actually minority from what I understand. Windows > linux > mac ..

          • @bono: How are your sharpness settings?

            • @ifreddo: Yes tried that in the OSD, too much sharpness causes bloom on this monitor, think I could go about 70% before the bloom got too bad, but eventually reverted to the 50% default because of the bloom. While sharpness is important, bloom is bad for focusing intently on small text.

      • Make sure to turn off windows upscaling. Looks nice and crisp after that. I set mine to 125% but it starts up on 150% for some reason.

  • Maaaaaan I don't need this for my Playstation at all. OZB has drained the old wallet today

  • +1

If there was only USB-C it would have been great.

    • This is definitely one of the key drawback for this monitor.
But apart from lack of USB-C, the height adjustment of this monitor is also limited.
(compare to LG 27 4k monitor that I owned)
The monitor could only stand ~10cm above my desk.

  • Does anyone know if the panel can be overclocked to 75hz+?

    • If you can explain how to overclock it, I am happy to have a go for you!

      • +1

Awesome, if you have an Nvidia graphics card then in the in the Nvidia control panel there's an option called 'customize' under the 'change resolution' options, which is under the 'display' tab on the left. If you have an AMD or Intel GPU then I'm not familiar with how to do it. Small disclaimer - there is a very slim possibility to damage the monitor by overclocking it, although I haven't heard or read about it ever happening, overclocking anything always has risks so it's fine if you are not comfortable with proceeding.

Once you clicked on customize, there's a box to 'create a custom resolution'. With a 4K monitor the resolution you want to set is '3840 × 2160', but the important option to change is the refresh rate (in hertz).

By default that value will be 60hz, as it's a 60hz monitor. If you type 75 in that box and then hit OK it will try to display 4K at 75hz. If it doesn't work you will see a black screen with a possible error message saying "can't display the resolution" or something to that effect - wait 20 seconds and it should revert to the older settings which displayed fine.

If it works at 75hz then great, the panel can do 75hz. There's the possibilty that even though it can display 75hz, that the pixels won't be able to shift fast enough despite being able to accept the signal - which may result in moving objects having a dark or light trail depending on if it's overshooting or blurring.

If you have trouble with the instructions I wrote then here's a quick video on how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUwwtNIRndo (the method I described starts at the 35 second mark).

My current monitor is a Dell S2721D which is a 75hz monitor but if I try to overclock it even 1hz, it will have an error message and then revert back to the previous settings after 20 seconds of the error message.

        • I only have a Mac mini M1 sorry. Any idea how to do that on Mac?
(My windows laptop is for work, and it has Intel integrated graphics, can't even drive 2 4k monitor)

          • +1

@airly: It's a bit convoluted with Mac and I can't find any information about if those methods even work with the M1. I don't want to suggest any method I haven't used myself but thanks for offering though.

  • OMG, I just got this few days earlier for $417. Gosh, would it be possible to return and repurchase lol

    • +3

they have 30 day price guarantee!

      • +1

OMG! Just Googled it. THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW! YAY!

A review for the 32". For this price, no complain from me. it does its job and personally, it's amazing. I felt like I'm sitting in a mini cinema at the right angle. Obviously quality wise, can't compare to IPS panel but for such a price, what the heck lol. Oh, the sound system is not bad as well. Decent enough and doesn't make my ear bleed unlike my ASUS TUF VG279QM's lol

        • +1

I bought the S2721Q last week, amazing monitor but downsizing from a 32 make it feel tiny haha, might give this one a try instead

          • +1

@2inchtycoon: I did not regret getting it :D Just don't expect IPS panel quality hahaha!

  • This vs 34" Ultrawide… Gosh… I am struggling to decide… I only use them as a productivity screen. Is the 4k better real-estate than ultrawide? which has crisp text rendering?

    • Personally I found note vertical real estate (ie this monitor )more useful than having additional horizontal. Reason being for excel and web pages, even .docs you appreciate being able to read more data/text

    • I had the same dilemma, main use is productivity with light gaming. Went with this one and glad I did.

With this ratio at 4K I can comfortably divide the display into 4, each area being bigger than a 14" laptop screen which I use on the go. I think you'd be hard pressed to get anymore than 3 side by side displays on a 34" ultra wide.

Also, a 34" ultrawide is actually slightly less in area

Screen quality is excellent, text is razor sharp, inky VA blacks compared to IPS. Viewing angles a non-issue when viewed on centre. A steal at this price, I paid about $550 last year.

    • I have both side-by-side. Depends entirely on how you use desktop realestate.

FWIW, I use the ultrawide as my main monitor, because for main document windows, I prefer the aspect ratio of split screen on the ultrawide (2x 1720x1440) rather than split screen on the 32" 4K (2x 1920x2160). I also don't like using 4x 1920x1080 on the 32" for main documents either. Plus, using the ultrawide splitscreen as my main 2-3 spaces to work on, allows me to use the bigger realestate on the 32" 4K more flexibly. eg. Using 4x 1920x1080 for smaller reference windows, or in portrait with 3x 2160x1280. I stick to split screen (or 3 panels) for the most part on the ultrawide, but it gives me the freedom to arrange random sized windows as needed on the 32" 4K.

If I could only have 1, and had to choose between the two…well, I'm not sure! I guess I might end up choosing the 32" 4K purely for the larger realestate…but I would be sad! :)

34" ultrawide + 32" 4K is amazing! I highly recommend it for the flexibility! (best of both worlds) :)

Paid $580 in November…….price drop again $200 down the drain

    • +2

      Same here, spewing!

      • -1

        F@#king seriously…..Spewing

        • And to add insult to injury, my monitor got delivered in January when I ordered in Nov lol

          • @montorola: Have any of you found the screen to have washed out colour? I've even got the ICC colour profile configured… Strongly considering returning it

    • Get a credit card with 1-year price protection. Every OzBargainer should have one!

      • Which cards still offer that? My 28degrees cancelled it :(

        • I've got it on my 28 Degrees card, have saved hundreds of dollars over the past few years. Why did yours get cancelled, haven't heard of that before?

      • Checked my card (Citibank Premier) and only get 60 days protection, not valid for on-line stores. Seems pretty measly

  • I Experience flickering (screen turning black for a sec), anyone else? HDMI connection to a GT 540m laptop, but happens even when viewing webpages

    • -1

I had that exact same problem on a friends PC but a DGF Dell monitor.

It turned out to be the cable, we changed the DisplayPort cable for a different type and it went away.

    • I experience this sometimes, and it's only on this monitor not the others on the same pc. Fixed by a reboot.

Based on those two factors it's likely a driver issue. I have this exact S3221QS. Please let me know if you find a solution.

      • Might be the cable though .. worth trying replacing that

  • +1

For this monitor, make sure you are connecting via the right cable for 60 Hz. Was previously using HDMI and it was capped at 30 Hz. Changed to Display Port at its a huge difference.

    • i have a quality HDMI cable still can't get 4k output from PS4 pro on 60 Hz. 4K output is not true it only does 2k

      • For this monitor, I recommend swapping to DP, or if there's none on the PS4 try a DP to HDMI 2 adapter.

      • That's strange, the stock PS4 Pro cable that comes with the console supports 4K/60 output. Some cheap 3rd party cables don't (typically HDMI 1.4 cables), but that's why Sony includes the correct HDMI 2.0 cable in the box.

        • I've tried using the stock one and even the one that came with PSVR doesn't work

    • I don’t think that’s right, you may have a dodgy cable. It has HDMI 2.0 which supports 4K @ 60hz over HDMI. Can someone confirm they can get 60hz over HDMI ? I’m about to pull the trigger on this one but need this confirmed.

      • +1

I went to DP for this monitor. I don't remember all the details as had various issues with it, but definitely went from HDMI to DP for this specific monitor.

        • +1.

I used the included hdmi cable and could only get 29hz.

Switched to dp and got 60hz.

      • I used HDMI cable directly from my Mac mini M1 to this monitor. Getting 60Hz in 4k no issue at all.

  • Thanks! Just got 1 :)

  • Dell S2721QS 27" 4K Monitor below $300 may be a better option for ppl who want to claim tax.

    • +1

But 4K is too small on 27"

  • Thanks OP! Had been waiting for this one for a few weeks to drop in price and this made me pull the trigger. Much appreciated!

Anyone got an indication on how long it might take to arrive to metro Brisbane? How is Dell's shipping nowadays?

  • been keeping an eye on this one for a few weeks, seems to be lowest price for this one so have taken the 4K plunge

  • +1

This is a valid coupon code, but there are no matching items currently in your cart

    • I'm getting the same message.
