A Cheaper Place for WISC Test for Kids Please?

School teacher need us to test him out as he could not focus in the classroom and keep talking to other students :(

Any place in Sydney could offer the service for 250 dollars by any chance? Are they mainly done by students since it is much cheaper than others?

Just got a quote for 800 dollars which is a bit dear for us.

With kids have this problem, is it best to change him to a private school please? I have seen people got a loan for kid's education.

Many Thanks.

It may be better to read up on what the WISC test is and also contact the school councilor as they can do a bunch of test for free to see if there are any learning or intellect or behavior issues. The school councilor is FREE!!!! The school councilor report will be biased towards intellect to see if you child needs special help at school.

Be aware that if the councilor does find something then you may need to go to a child psychologist to do more tests to get a formal diagnosis and this may cost you. To minimize the child psychologist costs you can get a mental health plan from your GP for 5 visits in a calendar year. The child psychologist diagnosis is required to get government help in it is needed.

    • Thanks very much for your reply.

Our teacher said kids who are behind got help from school counselor. Our son is in the middle of the class even though he is not focusing.

There's a supporting teacher once a week for a group of students including him. That,s all they could do in a public school at the moment.

As I said "contact the school councilor as they can do a bunch of test for free".

Have you contacted the school councillor and asked them to do some tests on your child, like the WISC, ABAS-3, YARC, WAIT-III? The last three I know for a fact that in NSW the school councilor does these tests as my son did these when he was in primary school.

        • I have not said the teacher.

$800 is fairly cheap, got quoted $1200+ from the psychologists referred to us through our contacts at GERRIC.

None of the uni psych clinics will do it unless there's an underlying medical condition. MQ and USyd runs one and there's a bit of a waiting list.

We got ours done through the school's counsellor - they've all got access to them. Our kid ended up with doing WISC, WIAT and some other EQ stuff out of them for free.

    • Thanks very much for your reply.

Just called MQ but they are fully booked and not taking any more patients at the moment.

We went to a public school where resources are limited.

      • The counsellors are attached to the department, not the school so I wouldn't take 'no' for an answer. We waited 3 weeks between the school agreed to organise the test and the first tests being administered and it's a public school. If your school does have a lot of speech delayed/learning difficulties kids then you will be bumped like we did as another kid was deemed more urgent than ours.

So what are you trying to get out of this? To identify your son as gifted? If the school's already under resourced then there's little they can do to accommodate you with individual learning plan/program (forgot which 'P' it is) and if you're thinking by switching to private will address this adequately then you might be in for a rude shock.

        • Our teacher said we might able to get more help from school if he is ADHD.

@jiaqi518: Correct, but you will need a formal diagnosis from a child psychologist that says ADHD and as per my previous post about getting 5 free visits, but it will still cost you.

You are better to start with the school counselor as they are free, but do not give a diagnosis.

            • @AndyC1: We have got a letter from our pediatrician states the issues now. Thanks for your help.

              • @jiaqi518: Is it a formal diagnosis? If not then the school cannot get extra money from the government in order to help your child at school and is only useful for referral or as background info for a child psychologist.

                • @AndyC1: No, it is not a formal diagnosis. Hopefully our school counselor will see us? Or otherwise, we will have to get WISE privately ourselves.

                  • @jiaqi518: You do not need any referrals or anything to see the school counselor if you think there is an issue.

@jiaqi518: I'm not a shrink but I don't think WISC is used to diagnose ADHD. Leave it to the professional to decide what tests are required and take @AndyC1's advice. Go get a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, get your referral and take it from there if ADHD is what the school is suspecting. Medicare only covers up to $125 per session so you'll be out of pocket.

  • What do you hope the WISC will prove and what outcomes do you think the WISC result will enable?

If your child is not exhibiting behavioural issues that affect their development (e.g. they are still achieving middle of class results) then they are generally not going to be eligible for support from the school even if you get an external WISC done.

    • Yes, our teacher said he might get some help if the WISC results indicating ADHD.
