Why does everyone suddenly have $5 gift cards?

I think I may be out of the loop.

On Ozbargain Classifieds, everyone is swapping their Priceline or JBHIFI or whatever $5 gift cards.
What am I missing?

    You missed Shopback once again trying to cover their bad image with a token gesture that people gobble up and quickly forget about how terribly they treat their customers.

    marketers keep telling companies that $5 is the perfect incentive to get people to start buying their cheap, high revenue items.

    $5 is built into the price of everything anyway.
