Can you use ADSL2+ router with Optus?

Might be a silly question but i am currently with Telstra and TPG and wanting to move to a home phone/broadband bundle with Optus and just wanted to make sure my Billion ADSL2+ Router would still work as i was told by the sales person that optus works through some sort of different cable (forgot what it was) and my modem may not work.

Main reason i want to change is because Telstra didnt activate one of the telephone ports in my computer room so i have to run a cord half way round the house to a different telephone port which is really annoying and was told it would cost around $100 to get a technician to have a look. So im hoping Optus will fix the problem when they install the home phone.

Any suggestions let me know! Thanks.

  • i assume you are moving from adsl -> cable. in that case, you will need a cable modem. if your router has an ewan interface then you should be able to configure it to go via the modem for internet access.

  • +1 to mattgal's comment. It may also be worth noting if the package you've signed up for includes a free modem/router (IME lots of Optus ones do)…if so, why not just use that as you're effectively paying for it anyway?

You could also get a private contractor to look at your cabling issue too, lots of Telstra accredited guys out there who will actually fix a simple issue for less than the hundred Telstra might charge just to look!

The other (shifty) option of course is to wait til Optus connects you, then call them & say "hey, since you connected me, my phone outlet has stopped working, what have you guys done?" They might fall for it! :p

  • Hmm yeah just did some research and the router i have doesn't have that interface.
Yeah the package includes a free modem or an extra $60 for a wireless one which is what i need.
i haven't actually signed up yet, still thinking what my best option is, might look into finding a private contractor and stick with TPG.

  • If it's Optus ADSL, then you can use your own modem.

If it's Optus Cable, then they must give you a new modem

The Optus Routers are absolute CRAP. You are better off getting a standard wired modem, then adding your own WiFi and Router.

If it's Cable, the technician comes and installs. If it's ADSL, then you do the installation yourself.

    • Okay looks like im going to sign up with Optus. By looking at this I'm pretty sure its Cable? https://www.optus.com.au/shop/Bundles/Bundles/Optus-Broadban…
So you're saying not to pay $60 for their wireless modem? Can you recommend one that i may be able to pick up from somewhere like MSY for around the same price or cheaper. So then i will need to use their standard wired modem and configure a Router aswell? Sounds confusing!

      • No, it's ADSL, as you can see from Step 2, and the service availability check, which asks for a phone number. It's confusing as they also offer a premium cable broadband service for more money.

As llama said, for ADSL you can procure your own modem/router combo. But take their free modem anyway in case you need to double check signal strength with their modem.

        • Awesome thank you!
