Economical way to send parcel overseas

I need to send a 2kg parcel to UK, Australia Post wants $80, any other ways to reduce to cost without going to sea mail?

Cheers!

get some one from the UK to post you 2kg brick when you get it open it, put your item in it, then wright on it "not at this address"

job done! that will work out heaps cheaper

  • I've never found a way. But I guess if you live near an airport, maybe hang around the gate for UK flights… excuse yourself to some of the earliest arrivals (so they're not rushed and unwilling to listen), pick a family (as they're more likely to be honest), explain the situation, have the package pre-addressed, give them $30/$40 to take it on the plane with them and pay UK PO when they get there.

A similar way is to join all the forums you can find - and ask if there's anyone flying there. Pick someone with a high post count who others on the forum seem to know.

Apart from that - no idea. I don't know how UK bookstores afford to send for free postage. Amazon is the same… I placed an order and said I could wait - i.e. Don't split the order to send separately. They did it anyway, sending a $25 item 3 weeks before the rest of the order. It would have cost them $20 in postage!

    • In all seriousness, I don't think this is a good idea because what if they think you're giving them a brick of heroin? Then they think they would be drug mules.

EDIT: Realsteel made the same point before me

realfamilyman- I am not sure how many people would be keen on taking a parcel that way. With all the drug etc trafficking going on- not sure if people would be keen on taking parcel unless they can open it and see it- even then people would be reluctant.

    • And then there's the issue of said traveller not sending the package at all and keeping it for himself/herself.

      Too much risk IMO.

  • Yeah, I know… It really has to be someone you know in some way - unless you could pack it right there with them watching. But I'd probably say no too.
