As a qnap user/hostage, I'd suggest people check r/qnap before diving in:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/qnap

For some reason, I assumed they were a reputable brand. God, was I wrong.

    • +2

There was recently a vulnerability issue for Ransomware. Qnap said a firmware upgrade resolve the vulnerability. However, vitims are not very happy there, I guess.

      • Yeah. This time (lol), there were multiple patches in rapid succession. It felt like they were guessing at what the issue was.

Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm exaggerating, but it seems like there's a serious vulnerability every few months. The software is flaky AF and the updates often break features.

e.g. A couple of updates ago, it disabled the home directories (again).

I'll switch to Synology, when I find the time…

  • Maybe cheaper to get a low end desktop to replace these Qnap, full of security holes and as noisy as desktop after 1 year.

    • +4

All devices cooled by fans become noisier in time. Fan bearing surface degrade being mechanical component. The solution is to replace the fan for <$10.

      • +1

Replacing fan sort out the noise but not the security holes… YMMV

  • Did they add more stock? Only been 4 available nfor a few days.

    • Don't know but now showing 2 left, as it seems to be ozbargained.

      • +2

        That's 2 sold since yesterday 😉

        • +1

ha ha, of course these don't sell like eneloops. :)

          • +2

@megadeth: Of course. I've been thinking of buying this all weekend.

            • +1

@Clear: I beat you to it… ;) All the best.

I was weighing buying vs waiting for click frenzy next week but took the plunge, price is just too good. I badly need a nas as my single disc WD Mycloud is overflowing to the USB drive.

              • @megadeth: WD MyCloud are icky so you've definitely made a good purchase upgrading to this. I'm already rocking an 8 bay Synology and a TerraMaster so for me this would just look pretty in the homelab :)

  • +5

this is a BRILLIANT offer, ignore the scare tactics of those who are anti QNAP.

ive got 3 QNAP's for the past 10 years and i just ordered this unit… ITS AN AMAZING PRICE POINT.

i have not been hit by the ransomware, as im sure many others also havent'

just use a VPN to access ur QNAP remotely, dont let people connect to it directly and ur sweet —- just common sense for any1 with minoir tech savvyness.

enjoy and thanks for the bargain find!!

    • +1

+1… Most tech-savvy people update the firmware regularly anyway.

      • +3

im honestly considering grabbing a 2nd one of these, for redundancy. the price point is insane.

        • Ha ha… I'm on the hunt for WD reds :)

          • +1

@megadeth: just wait for the next time those WD 18TB expansions come on sale, grabbed some at ~$450 earlier this year.

            • @sachz: Do you mean USB external HDDs, do they have reds in them, and can be shucked?

              • +1

@megadeth: usb yea but dont get overdrawn on red's, the shucked drives are just as good. i used to be in the "must be reds" camp, but then u realise they're all the same…

best thing i did was put my nas's behind a UPS and my drives rarely fail… its the power brown outs that are their worst enemies, truly.

      • +2

The problem was not out of date firmware, and it's disingenuous to suggest that the user was ever at fault. It was a vulnerability built into the Qnap app, HBS3, where Qnap left a universal password that had root access. Also, HBS3 was pushed out to all systems with a firmware update a while ago. So if you were super diligent and updated your firmware every week/ day you're still vulnerable.

        • Not blaming the user but how hard is changing the default password?

          • +1

@megadeth: only IF u allow ur QNAP to be accessible from the outside directly

those with VPN's were totally safe, totally.

          • @megadeth: It wasn't the default password at all, it was a hidden credential inside an official Qnap app. There is literally no option to change it, even a knowledgeable user wouldn't know it was there.

  • this or ds920+ ? any advise folks ?

    • +1

This one is much powerful than ds920, CPU performance is 1.5 times of that of J4125
But no GPU in this one. So an entry level graph card is required if you would like to transcode 4k video or have an HDMI output.

  • All sold out, while I was ordering.

    • try again :)

overseas supplier may have incorrect price but go for it if you still want it

  • I think it was a bug price.
The link became unavailable while I was searching the details of this model.
    T-T

  • back in stock

  • 2 of them back in stock

    • they go quick now 1 in stock

  • ordered one for second NAS

    • Ordered one for replacing the Synology 716+ii

  • went out stock
    and again back in stock

    • Yes it is back, please report using the report button directly under the deal.

  • +1

For better or worse I just got one too, I hope Qnap sort out these issues before it turns up.
But this is a bargain for Plex.

    • thoughts on a GPU for this QNAP 473 model, for PLEX transcording etc…

the compatibility lists recommends the MSI GTX1050 TI 4GT LP as it seems the highest graded card

however, the 1650 has superseded the 1050 (which is expired & hard to get), and has better performance.

      any ideas guys?

      • +1

Given this NAS was released in 2018 and the GTX 1650 was released in 2019 I'd say the list hasn't been updated and it should be compatible. Looking around it seems the GTX 1650 Super however is not.

        • interestingly, the GTX 1650 as you say should be fine. i assume it doesnt matter if its an MSI or ASUS or GIGABYTE GTX 1650 and they'll all work? the compatibility list only shows MSI.

i agree tho to stay away from the 1650 super as it's a very different GPU.

        • ive researched online and i cant find any reference to anyone using a GTX 1650 on any QNAP.

i know what ur saying that spec wise they are similar, with the 1650 being newer than the 1050.

do u have any reference to any1 who has used one?

i guess if purchased a GPU 150 thru ebay ebay plus can always return for free if it just doesn't work,

          appreciate ur thoughts?

      • The qnap 473 was released in 2018, the PCIE is only 4x speed. I don't think it is necessary to install a GPU greater than the GTX1050 shown in the compatibility list.

Someone tried GPU on QNAP TVS-472XT Here: https://www.xfastest.com/thread-227462-1-1.html. He would like to install a ZOTAC GTX 1660 Ti, but failed, it was not recognised by the QTS. Then he tried RX580, it worked. The pass-through to windows was ok, but the performance was only half the original.

The more you need to notice: 1. only low profile graph cards can be installed in TS-473 2. No extra power supply for graph cards in TS-473

        • fair enough, tho the 1050 is also a PCIE 16x card so ur not losing anything given the 1650 is PCIE 16x also.

agree tho that LOW PROFILE is mandatory, the rest — just make sure u can return it if it doesnt work. i'm still tempted to try a higher end one in case it hit the jackpot, tho will stick with 1650 and not go 1660/other…

  • Does this seller have good reputation? Product from oversea, how about the warranty ?

    • The seller is an Approved Catch seller since July 2017 (Silver Seller 95.3%). QNAP standard warranty for this item is 2 years.

      Seller's T&Cs Summary
All Goods Supplied come with a 1 year return to base warranty (no different than MSY etc., I guess)
Full refund on DOA reported within 7 working days if opened
Non-faulty returns, must be in saleable condition, and will be subject to a minimum 20% restocking fee.
Freight charges will not be credited.

      • might have to ship overseas for return to base warranty

  • +2

You'd be crazy to connect your NAS to their cloud services for external access regardless of the brand. VPN for external access is the way to go!

    • Hi mate, try ddns instead

  • +2

Update, the order has been cancelled…
    Nice work Catch!

    • Same here, just got a mail for refund

      • Same… says ‘incorrect item’… was a pricing error which the seller has decided not to honour. 😭

    • oh damn THATS EXTREMELY POOR FORM.

i havent used catch for ages, and now i know why.

NOT GOING to use them again for a very long time.

      so dissapointing!

      • Totally agree. Charged me $453, refunding $412.
I know I can fight to get full refund, but…
        Never use them again.

        • i got the same message.

          i think u'll find the $412 is ex-GST.

add $41.20 for GST and the full amount becomes $453

          it's a U.S. thing.

if i only get $412 i'm going to put in an authorised withdrawal claim thru my bank

          fix ur game CATCH.

    • Great, what am I going to do with $450 worth of catch credit now?

      • No it's a refund to the payment method not Catch credit. How about QNAP TR-004? Lucky I didn't buy any accessories/disks for it.

      • Definitely dodgy, same bucket as Kogan.

My gift card had a 3 year expiry, and can be gifted to others if I wanted to.

They refunded as account credit, which has a 1 year validity and is stuck to my account.

        • this is DODGY as F**K, sorry to say but its left an extremely sour taste in my mouth.

i was just about to buy the GPU card for this unit, lucky i was still revieiwing the precise model to get.

what a disaster this has turned out.

NOW, to wait and see how long it'll take to get refunds and ensure we get our FULL REFUND, not some dodgy 98%…

  • Sold out then restock, then refund. Dodgy deal to collect personal information?

  • Please check carefully. They charged $453, the email was saying refund only $412.

    • $412.00 is in us dollars, I received the full $453 via PayPal.
      Check Paypal account.

      • $US412= $AU526 (at 1:1.28 currently)
        $412 + 10% GST ($41.20) = ~$453

ie it is not in $US it is the price without GST.

Hopefully everyone else receives the full amount due.

        • I got refund in full

  • Just remember that it's not Catch who pulled this, but F Digital the store as Catch is a marketplace of sellers.

    • +1

Catch may not have pulled this, but it is their platform that is causing customers anguish with their unfair refund policy for purchases using gift cards.

A lock-in that reduces the expiry time frame from 3 years to 1, together with the inability to sell/transfer your credit means that customers lose out every time a seller makes these types of mistakes. Do you think we'll come back after this?

      • Isn't that how it usually goes with gift card?

        • Most retailers that I purchased with gift card would refund via a gift card. Eg Big W cancellations are returned via Wish egift.

Amazon returns it to your pool of redeemed gift card balance but it has no expiry.

Some dodgy ones would refund as store credit even if you paid via CC or cash.

With Catch, you are worse off than before you purchased, as you get a reduced expiry and you can't pass it on to someone else. Plus it is not a change of mind. Their seller cancelled due to their own mistake.

  • Possibly another reason why they refund to store credit and not gift card. I had a promo code sent to me last week, $15 off min $60 spend. Store credit does not count towards minimum spend total. See below:

*$60 min spend excludes shipping, Club Catch membership fees, gift cards, or Catch Connect products. If used in conjunction with store credit, the available store credit amount will not count towards the minimum spend total. Single use only. Discount not refundable. No further discounts apply. Valid until 12:00 AM (AEST) 11 May 2021

    • hang on, so im NOT getting my cash returned back to my bank card that i used to purchase this thing with?

there's got to be a trade practices act breach right there! im sure catch dont want a pentalty.

      • Yes you are. If you pay with gift cards it's not uncommon for stores to refund with store credit.

        Also https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/10444402/redir

        • This is where the option of afterpay works out well.

No payment due for 2 weeks

      • I paid with zip pay and received full credit but have to double check as the zip app is dodgy and is showing both original and refund transaction as ‘-$453.64’.

  • stlll no funds returned, even tho i got the email that funds are being returned.

how quick they are to take, and how slow they are for my money to come back.

i trust every1 has their full refunds back in their bank accounts….???

    • I received confirmation from zip pay that it's been correctly processed. All the best… It was a shame this happened on my post. Sorry man.

      • all good dude, paypal is reporting refund should be completed by 13th May at 4am, so almost there.
        /?
brilliant deal on QNAP's, if only they stuck to it… any reason on why they were pulled?

        • Great to see you're seeing some movement on refund. My refund email just says 'Operator refund: Incorrect item'. Think some lazy sales guy missed a 1 in front of the price.

          • @megadeth: how is $1453.64 a "catch" deal? :)

            • @sachz: full refunds were seen in my account today, phew. as i ordered 2x of the units, im happy to see my $900 back :)

            • +1

@sachz: Must have been a pricing error

              • @megadeth: confirmed pricing error, below cost, hence cancelled.
