Probably a Stupid Question about Canesten (and Alternatives) for Anti-Fungal Rinse

Does anyone know if cheap home brand disinfectants with the same ingredient on the front would do the same job as the "proper" laundry rinse products?

For example, this Canesten product which I usually buy for my socks and gym clothes is 70g/L Benzalkonium Hydrochloride:

Whereas this product here has the same ingredient on the front, but works out cheaper (at $3.3/L compared to $8.8/L):

Only thing I wouldn't be sure about is one says 70g/L while the other says 1.5% w/w, I'm not exactly sure how to convert them both into a comparable format.

  • 1.5% w/w means 1.5g dissolved into 100g of solution.

Assuming the solution is a mixture of the active chemical and just water (at a density of 1.0) you would have 1.5g of active chemical per 100g of solution. Factor that up to the litre quantity by multiplying it by 10 and it’s 15g/litre.

Maybe we have an industrial chemist who can confirm this? Been a while since I did any chemistry.

    • Ah if that's the case and the "cheap" disinfectant is actually 15g/L, that means less than 1/4 as concentrated as the Canesten at around 1/3 the price, so it doesn't really work out to be worth it. Thought I was being smart haha guess not

If its on hard surfaces, regular old bleach works just as well.
Just note most of these fungicides are simply glorified bleach, and they will kill almost all moulds but not the spores. It's very difficult to kill spores. I've heard that "Clove Oil" is one of the things that does kill spores.

If it bleeds, we can kill it…

        • Don't kill the spores. Elon Musk will need them to make the spore drive.

    • As someone who know these products well, all I can say is that industrial grade Benzalkonium CHloride contain more impurities and therefore may not be suitable for personal care use, compared to that used on products where contact with skin can occur.

70g/L equates to 7%w/v, compared to the disinfectant at 1.5%w/w. Bear in mind, the former product is designed for use where rinse off will occur.

This has the same active ingredient and same quantity as the canesten but half the price

    • Oh wow this is actually perfect, haven't seen this one before. Thanks

  • This is effectively the same active ingredient and has 100g per litre.

I use this for cleaning hard surfaces such as concrete, bricks etc., and to get rid of algae in the pool, and to kill moss on my garden, and to disinfect fabric.
