Cheap phone/device that can read .txt files?

hey guys, i'm going to be a student again this year and just need some new devices to help me through it. i've got a laptop i might use, but i was thinking of trying something else out instead.

i just need something i can create notes on my PC tower and then access them in class. so i thought creating notes in a .txt file and sending them across a USB cord to a phone or a device and then accessing them in class was the best way to go. what do you guys think? the phone i use right now doesn't have usb — would it be possible to send SMS messages from my PC tower to the phone i currently have? then i wouldn't need to get a new device.

i'm also thinking of getting this: http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Ebo… it works by backing up my notes and i can access them on my pc.

  • Reading text notes off a phone would be both impractical and difficult, as

    1. phones don't have very large screens, and won't make very good reading devices
    2. you can't annotate or bookmark long sections

An ideal alternative would be an Android tablet, such as the Optus MyTab, or a eBook reader such as the Amazon Kindle ($99 refurbished from BigW)

With an Android tablet, it is possible to both take and read notes, and even view powerpoint slides (you just need the appropriate office app installed).

  • +1 for a e-reader. Plain .txt files are supported. And you gain entry to the world of e-books.

  • You might be better off with a word document in PC sent to an android device with apps like "Documents to Go".

With that, you can even import the cheap kindle fire for such purposes. (Although I'm pretty sure you would have to root it and install Market before you can install any apps.)

  • Kindle Keyboard, im sure it does txt

  • +1

Get a cheap Android tablet. Install Evernote on both your PC and your tablet. Done — now you can take notes on both your PC and your tablet and sync to each other. I have actually been taking notes on my Acer Iconia A500 (10.1" so maybe not in the cheap sub-$100 category) and tidy things up when I get back home on Evernote on my laptop.

You can also install Kingsoft Office, which allows you to open/edit MS Office documents.

  • i wasn't looking at making a long list of notes. just like a 'to do list' with a few words in each sentence like:
    -return book to lib
    -talk to teacher X

    etc

    • The cheapest way that I can think of would be to sign up for one of those free SMS sites. Type it up on your PC then send it to yourself.

But if you want to buy something and/or upgrade to a phone that lets you connect to computers, I'd look at getting a cheap android.

    • Get a cheap android phone, download and install a 'to do list/agenda' app and there you go.
Ive got launcherpro on my phone and that has a to do list linked with the calendar.
