nbn Cabinet - Worth Getting It from a Builder in New Home?

We're building a new house and in the process of finalising the selections from the builder

Previously where we rented we had the NBN box right in the garage attached to the wall with the backup battery, had 1 cat 6 cable coming out if the wall and connected to NBN box - the house had just 1 data point

Now the house we are building has 4 data points , the builder has an option to install an NBN cabinet for 800 Aud , which comes with place for a wifi router , nbn box , 2 power points and 6 RJ 45 connection points

Question is , is it worth getting that from the builder ?

Can i get that installed later ? I can I just leave a power junction as to where I want the cabinet installed later ?

I wont be using the cabinet to place wifi in the garage.. mostly likely it'll be in tthe house

Let me know if anyone have experience with this

Do it later. Just ask for data and power points to be placed.

I am usually more concerned about clean installation of the data point and the NBN box, so i would definitely get from the builder as they can hide everything in the wall. While clean installation might be achievable if you decide to do it later, but its not always the case. I have seen enough houses having nbn box in a horrible location when i was having inspections to buy house. So if you wanna add it later, make sure cables can be easily installed and hidden in the wall.

That depend how much you value the outcome.

I think it is reasonable upfront cost if you can't do this yourself and avoid damaging the cables (data, power) behind the wall.

Even a cavity to place a switch is good. You'll need one to split your internet connection into the four data points

the question is do you really want to put your wifi router in the garage?

On a side note, make sure your builder engages with nbn to get a connection installed to your property.

My mum's place was built ~2 years ago and the builder did not organise for her FTTN lead in to be installed, and it was a very painful process getting it done post construction as nbn's milestones are aligned with the construction process.

Assuming it is a new build on a new block/subdivision, nbn will require you to dig a trench, install a conduit and have internal wiring in place. nbn will then install a lead in cable, install their PCD box on the side of the house and connect up the existing internal wiring - and charge $300 for the pleasure. This differs from the process for premises that existed at the start of the rollout.

Or it might be a premises that has been connected previously and all my info is irrelevant :)

    • Thanks, I'll confirm this - but I think it's part of the package, that's why they wanted me to get the cabinet

Do it latter yourself. An example of a cabinet for $284 at the moment is:

just get them to put data points in, you can do everything else

In my opinion, a cabinet is a waste of money. In the garage, just have the NBN box, power and a single data point and it will look neat. Plug the NBN box into the single data point with a short lead. Terminate all the network leads into the room where your router will sit (eg in a cupboard in study or entertainment unit in lounge).

    • This is, with volume builders, it gets hard to go with customizing things - like with the camera situation I wanted them to add provisions / cabling for the cameras, which they refused - unless I buy the whole package from them - I doubt they'll agree to it

      • Can you refuse all network cabling then and pay for someone else to do it? We've done that before. It just needs to be timed so they go in before the walls are put up.

        • I have already asked that, they won't allow any external contractors to go in until handover because of legal problems in case someone damages the work they are doing etc

  • Excessive. Just pay for cabling make sure they leave ends sticking out of garage hole in wall. I used to only charge $120 to connect from there to a socket or nbn wall box. Nbn will charge $300 for new developments when you place your order

    • In the final estimates, it came to about $532 - so I just went with the builder to do it (6 RJ45 sockets - 4 will be wired, 2 power point connections and the cabinet itself)

  • I just moved into a new apartment with this setup. I plugged in NBN FTTP table into one of these said 6 sockets that connects to the lounge and placed my router in the lounge.
It worked for 2 days and now it's a bust!
