Should introducing be compulsory?

Introduction should be the common way when joining a web forum, it's like when you meet new people so you should introduce yourself.

I've seen some guys just create a membership, they don't introduce themselves and go straight to a thread where the OP is digging itself by supporting them, then they just disappear.

I already have my idea but I would like to hear from other Ozbargainers.

So as per the title, should introduction be compulsory?

Mod: Not bargains/deals related. Moved to Announcement/Feedback forums.

Hi, my name is rob and i don't think it should be.

  • Come on guys, joining a web forum is same like meeting new people even if only virtually.
Also there's another issue regarding shockpuppeting and spamming as well.

    • I think you are missing the point of the internet. It is a terrible idea for a large community.

The thing is it's really obvious when a user is a sockpuppet or not

and my answer to your questions is no, just because some people prefer like an account with 0 post and 0 comments(like just to view ozbargain as it is)

  • Ill put a maybe. There are a lot of tossers on forums that hide behind a screen. Whilst this wouldn't stop them most people couldn't be bothered posting a 'hello' before they start their keyboard battles. So if it did happen it would probably weed a few out.

    • The purpose wouldn't be to stop all tossers (that is impossible) but at least it could make them feel participating in a web forum and interacting with other users.

  • Just so I understand, do you mean a new user should post in say the Introduce Yourself forum before they post anywhere else? What do mean about an OP digging itself? Perhaps you can give an example.

    • One example: Merchant x is arguing with forum's users regarding a product or service it is not able to provide also there are some users who posted they bad experience with the mentioned merchant.

What happens: suddenly a new user y just pop in the discussion and says that the merchant is good bla bla BS.
This user just joined Ozbargain and the first post was right in that discussion.
So this looks a bit suspicious to me.

It can look suspicious, although suspicion without evidence would still yield nothing. You can report to the mods and mods do get a bit more data to analyse, but I don't think people should be so quick point their fingers.

You also can see the "Who's Online" stats on the sidebar — 427 members and 2142 guests at the moment. That means 80%+ people reading an OzBargain page are non-members as a lot of people prefer this way. Some might have just spontaneously decided to log in to post a comment.

        • Yet it makes sense now by looking at logged members and guests.

Because sometimes ago I was not able to see the replays by members when I was not logged in so I thought that you must be a member in order to see the threads.
Maybe it just was a temporary internet issue.

At OzBargain we do quite aggressive caching for the guests (so we don't need to go out to buy big servers). They might have up to 15 minutes delay when they look at a web page. So if they are looking at a page with heavy on-going discussions, they won't see all the new comments coming up even after refresh.

    No

  • Yes

  • Just kidding, i was really going to create an account to back you up…..but meh

    • Not kidding. You got to the point!!

  • This should have been a poll / vote - I vote no. It's up to each person, just like in real life :)

    • I thought about the poll only later.
So really in the real life when you meet someone you don't introduce yourself?
Supposing you're male, so if you meet a nice chick?? :P

      • You're on the internet. There are no females. Only males, males in dresses, and the cyber police

      • Not if I'm just cruising around a store looking for bargains, which is similar to being here :)

  • No too. This isnt like real life. I dont think anyone really care where you're from and what you're hoping to achieve here… since its pretty obvious anyway. I doubt anyone would remember you anyway. It would just be like spam in the forum section.
