RTX 3080 or RTX 3090 Build Opinion - Alienware

Hi All,

Currently work is providing me a $1000 credit for any PC over $2000 I purchase so I've narrowed down my choices as there is a sale on at the moment;

New Alienware Aurora R12 – $3754 after $1000 work credit and 6% cashreward rebate is applied

11th Gen Intel® Core™ i9 11900KF (8-Core, 16MB Cache, 3.5GHz to 5.3GHz w/Thermal Velocity Boost)
NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3090 24GB GDDR6X
32GB Dual Channel DDR4 XMP at 3200MHz
1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (Boot) + 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)

Also comes with bundled with the following, I've just included current prices below for reference
Alienware 510M Gaming Mouse – $69.35
Alienware 510H 7.1 Gaming Headset AW510H – $94.95
Alienware 510K Low-Profile RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard AW510K – $173.25
Alienware 27" AW2720HF IPS Gaming Monitor FHD 1080p 240Hz – $584.34

Or

Alienware Aurora R11 – $2790 after $1000 work credit and 6% cashreward rebate is applied

10th Gen Intel® CoreTM i9 10900KF (10-Core, 20MB Cache, 3.7GHz to 5.3GHz w/Thermal Velocity Boost)
NVIDIA® GeForce RTXTM 3080 10GB GDDR6X
64GB Dual Channel DDR4 XMP at 3200MHz

Rest of the specs are the same but no bundled accessories or monitor

There is a $964 difference between the two setups, I don't need the monitor or accessories and would be happy to flog them off to reduce the price. Would I be better off with the 3090 and have less ram?

I am a avid gamer and have a 1440p monitor and will be using this PC for work and gaming. Don't do video editing or anything else really.

Is the 10th Gen i9 better as it has more cores? Really big choice as I haven't had a new PC in over 7 years.

Thanks All :)

32GB is more than sufficient RAM for gaming.
The monitor could probably be resold for ~$400 and the accessories ~$200 so around $600 back total. That makes about $364 upgrade from 3080 to 3090 which is worth it imo
I initially voted RTX3080 build and I can't change it.

Also where are you buying these from? Pretty sure the R11 is sold out on Dell's Website

    • Thanks FireRunner, That's what I was thinking in my mind.
If I could close the gap by selling the items then that would make it better for me.

Only thing that held me back was thinking the the 64GB of ram and more cores with the older 10th Gen i9 would be better.
But future proofing with the 3090 might be the way to go.

I don't do any sort of editing or content streaming, Just media, gaming and work.
I don't intend on getting a 4k monitor anytime soon as I just bought my 32inch 1440p Samsung G7 this year.

Just getting as much feedback for any solid reasoning to go with the 3080 build before I pull the trigger but I can't think of anything

      • RAM can always be upgraded later for relatively cheap but I doubt games will need more than 32GB anytime soon. 16GB is still ok nowadays.
Not too sure on the CPU situation though, I would hope performance per core is increased significantly to compensate the reduction in core count

I had the R11 purchased on Saturday before it sold out, Selected the pay via bank transfer option which basically secures the order on hold.

Then I saw the 3090 deal and held out. Haha!

        Wow strategy here

Don't know what intel is trying to pull with this new 11000 series, but you get 2 fewer cores with the 11900

    10900 = 10 cores, 20 thread
    https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/199328/…
    11900 = 8 cores, 16 threads. (So really it's just an i7 as far as I'm concerned)
    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/212252/…

But, according to this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/AMD_Stock/comments/kyl3tp/intel_cor…

"In CPU-z, the Intel Core i9-11900K is 11% faster than the Core i9-10900K in single-core tests but ends up 12% slower in multi-core tests." - of course is slower in multi-core, since you are comparing a 8 cores against a 10 cores…

I think games generally require faster single core speeds for better framerates, so maybe the newer 11900 is more suitable for you?

Here's a general comparison of these 2 CPUs

Also, avg dollar cost for the 3080 is better value than the 3090, as the performance increase isn't that substantial for what you are paying.

Hard to pick either one, as neither have my ideal configuration. Hopefully you can offset the price by selling either all of the peripherals in the first option (about $500), or sell 32gb of your 64gb in the second option about ($150)

RAM is cheap and you can upgrade it later. Don’t let it be a deciding factor.

Managed to get a mate to buy the accessories and monitor for $600

So now the price difference for a 3090 is $364 when all things are considered.
Agree that RAM is cheap and can be swapped anytime so not a factor.

Also looked at the difference in CPU speeds and it's negligible for a user like me.

    • CPU speeds won't see noticeable impact in gaming performance; 3090 runs games averaging 10-15% better than the 3080 so take those numbers as you will.

RAM shouldn't factor into your decision; anything above 16GB won't alter your performance noticeably.

If you already have the monitor + accessories doesn't that increase the price difference?

      • Those numbers for the 3090 don't really seem worth it at RRP
I am 100% selling all the accessories and monitor to my friend, He just told me $600 is too steep so we've settled on $500

Question is that 10-15% increase in performance is worth an extra $400 odd dollars.
Only thing I can think of is re-sale value or crypto mining performance? (Don't plan on selling for min 5 years so re-sale not really the best argument)

  • Heads up t he monitor is rubbish.
I sent mine back and used the credit towards a 1440p one.

    • I tried to chat with them and put the cost of the monitor towards extended warranty but they said they couldn't?

Did you chat Online or talk to someone?

I had the monitor arrive with the computer.
I called and complained about it and they offered to sell me a new one. I said I wasn’t buying another one until they allowed me to return the one they “gave me” I looked online at what it was selling for.
They sold me the new one and discounted it the “value” of the 1080p one and then when they new one arrived the courier collected the old one.

Keyboard, mouse and headset are top notch though.

per my calculation with Pcpartpicker, the 3080 option Is overpriced by $540, that' the premium to pay for 3080. On the other hand, the 3090 is actually a good deal as DIY is more expensive than pre-built. The diff is -$184 using eBay pricing for the extras. Assuming that we have to discount the accessories and monitor by another $200, the 3090 build is like all parts at retail price without any premium.

The only problem with the 3090-build is that it's too strong for a gamer. 32Gb RAM and 1TB SSD are not needed. The CPU could be cheaper as well

I hate paying extra $ for something, so I would get a 3090 case, then sell the accessories. It's a good deal for a super computer.

  • Just wanted to post my update, I didn't go ahead with Alienware.

    I kinda hit the PC lotto last night as a true Ozbargainer does;

(I won't name the retailer but there was a major pricing error and it's ready for collection now - Must have been a glitch?)

I've been offered the following build for $3515.96 AUD

Geez mate let us know if you successfully pick it up and that price is honoured for those specs. The RTX 3090 VISION OC alone goes for over $3K at current crazy prices. That deal is basically "pay for a GPU, get a free PC" lol. Ridiculously lucky if so!

      • I hope so mate - Credit card has been charged so it's just saying awaiting processing at the moment.
Probably won't be as I'm sure it would be well below cost but fingers crossed.

I'll post all details if it is though :)

        • That’s MWave right?

          • @steve84: looks right, it's $6000+ on their site. Hope you get it.

        • did you end up getting it?
