Dell Inspiron Laptop Keeps Shutting Down

My Dell Inspiron 5570 that is about 4 years old has been having some issues with unexpectedly shutting down. Started a couple of months ago, sometimes it will shut down three times a week, sometimes three times a day. It does seem to mostly happen when the charging cable has come loose, however power is often still at 90% plus.

I've looked online and on forums for some answers, but I can't find anything that exactly matches my problem / the solutions I tried haven't worked.

Anything I should try myself, or should I take into a computer repair store for answers? Thanks for any help!

Sudden shut down is usually due to overheat. Can you download Coretemp or HWMonitor to check temps.

You could open yourself and clean fans. It is hard to break things unless you use force and pry

blow out the side vent area with compressed air, if you get some crap come out of the intake, then you've solved it.

Possibly new thermal paste required for the CPU. It can dry up over time, losing effectiveness, resulting in overheating and eventually system shutdown.

    • I've had this with 2 HP laptops. First one I cracked it open and replace the paste. Brought temps down from 90s to 60c.

Can't be bothered with my current HP laptop. Just chosen to buy other brands since because of poor thermal management.

Definitely check to ensure there isn't dust build-up in the exhaust vent.

Skip past extended section where the comrade gets bamboozled by the chassis (don't use metal object when prying side clips), but easy enough to open and gain access to the CPU cooler.

If the battery is showing charge but the device powers off as soon as you unplug the AC charger from the system, then you may have a faulty/faltering charging circuitry on the mother board.

Does the laptop pass the Dell diagnostics tests? You can check by pressing F12 at the Dell logo screen after the laptop is powered on and then selecting "Diagnostics".

  • If none of the above works, bring it into a repair shop, see if they can fix it. If they can't or its too pricey, give it a factory reset and see if that helps at all.

    • bring it into a repair shop
