Caution Buying Seconds/Refurb from Sony eBay

I jumped on a Sony eBay deal about 2 weeks ago and grabbed a seconds Sony 75 inch TV.
Heard nothing from Sony for ages and finally got this response -

Unfortunately due to an overwhelming popularity, this product has since sold out, please accept our sincere apologies you have experienced however if you wish to cancel the order and get a full refund, please let us know so we can immediately process.

Pretty bummed as I was looking forward to a new TV but I guess it was too good to be true!

edit - Rather than a refund Sony have agreed to send me a brand new version of the same TV, which is a great outcome.

Sounds like they are willing to still send it but wait until they get new stock? Or am I just reading that funny

Yeah I asked them and they said they won’t be getting more anytime soon

Sony only gave you 1 option eh… wasn’t exactly a choice. Sounded nice but you still got shafted.

Sounds like Sony gave them a choice to have their money refunded or to let Sony keep the money anyway.

      Sounds like Gerry.

Is that worth a post ?

I paid $1500 with eBay gift cards which I’ll be stuck with so yeah it’s good for people to be aware that Sony are listing items that aren’t in stock

It was for me. Thank you op.

    Thanks for the PSA.

Is this against Ebay policy? e.g. Selling a product that you don't have.

    • eBay doesn't care - "it is the seller's responsibility to track stock quantities"

    • +5

Unlikely to be intentional. Could be mistake with stock numbers, could be batch got damaged, could be shipping issue. Things happen.

    • Mistakes happen, if it happened all the time eBay might step in

  • Is it because the deal got crazy, a lot of people bought it and stock ran out quickly?

    • +3

I wouldn't have thought it was difficult to manage:
      1) Count how many you have
      2) Make a listing for this qty

      • +3

Maybe they found a broken one before sending out?
        Other multitude of reasonsnas well.

      • Common sense? That's impossible lol

So they want you to cancel the order instead of them? Seems fishy, considering it's their fault not yours.

I am guessing it affects them more if they initiate the cancellation, but still I would insist they start the process instead of you.

    • Good point. I’ll do that!

Agreed, sounds like you have a choice to wait on stock or get refunded.
First response to Sony should be how long is the wait time anticipated to be?

      • Good idea. It sounds like they actually are offering you the choice to wait & if it becomes too long I guess there is a chance they will send you a new one to get it sorted out.

      • Yes I did and they said they won’t be getting more stock anytime soon and that I should initiate an eBay refund.
