Domestic Travel insurance for Covid

Hi all,

Looking to book accomodation for the family later this year. We are based in VIC and looking to go interstate

As we require a larger property (I.e 3-4 bedroom house), we are looking to book through the likes of airbnb or directly with property management etc.

Unfortunately, all of these companies cancellation policies are not helpful if border closures are enforced and travel is not possible. Most don’t even offer to change to a future date.

Faced with potentially losing $6-7k should snap closure be introduced, I am looking for domestic travel insurance that offers coverage for Covid events.

Has anyone found one? Or used one before?

Thank you

Why do people pose questions like this? I literally typed in 'Covid travel insurance' as a web search and found multiple solutions.

I mean I could understand if you were asking what the best deal was - or if it was worth it; but at some point you need to do a bit of work yourself I would have thought..

Ring around, get a few quotes and come back here when you've got a specific question.

When i Googled it the first hit did not cover OP’s scenario of closed borders (it refers to only personal medical quarantine bring covered on the first hit). I think OP has a valid question. I’m sick of others flaming out others on this forum for asking reasonable questions.

I did come across as a bit harsh - but seriously can't the OP pick up a phone? Do just a little bit of research, then present any questions they do have. I mean ring the insurance companies and fire away the questions you have - and yes this means real work - read the fine print.

Then being more enlightened they can go ahead and ask some pertinent questions - and stop expecting other people to solve all their problems (which I'm getting sick of). Largely because it's just not useful. You're not doing a grown adult a favour by spoon feeding them, like they are some wee child. We've all got problems in life and it would seem nice if you can just outsource them or rather offload them to other people without ever lifting a finger yourself. I get it. Is it right? Are you really helping them?

Maybe don't click on the post and read it then?

If I were you I simply wouldn't read the post. The reason I read the post was not because I had an answer to OP's question, but that I was interested in getting different perspectives from a range of genuine "users/reviewers". If you read the responses to questions like these you can get a broad summary of available options, a non-commercial take on what works best, hacks on alternative approaches and, importantly, refutations of any dubious claims.

Maybe reframe your "getting sick of people helping each other" to recognising a learning opportunity for yourself (which others are taking full advantage of.

    Hi,

    Look at: https://www.canstar.com.au/travel-insurance/coronavirus-trav…

Most (if not all exclude) sudden border closures.

    Look out for:
Does not cover claims relating to border closures and associated mandatory quarantine/self-isolation requirements.

    Hi,

As businesses are not covered by their own insurer from COVID events, it is unlikely insurer covers domestic travellers from similar events.

I've only seen companies giving credit to use in event of cancellation due to COVID, but not insurance companies.

    All the best and enjoy.

    • I would be more than happy with a credit to use at a later date. It seems most don’t offer that either

We've been using booking.com, and choosing properties based on generous cancellation conditions. Better to pay a bit more, and be able to cancel the booking within a few days or so at no cost, than lose the entire amount. This has worked well so far.

    • Yes I think the best approach is either to book just before your trip starts (risky) or book accommodation with generous cancellation policies (COVID or not) - if you pick carefully, you can even find airbnb listings that allow cancellations up to a day before arrival (though admittedly, most of the nice/popular ones aren't as generous). It also pays to call accommodation providers directly as they may be willing to offer a better cancellation policy (if they do, just remember to have it in writing).

  • You'll need to find an insurance company that will make custom policies and have them included covid related events. At the moment the majority (if not all) travel insurances don't cover covid related events (eg border closures and cost of quarantine). You'll probably find that the cost of the insurance will cost almost the same as the cancellation fees to cover all parties (assuming you can find an insurer who's willing to take on the risk).

  • You don't need travel insurance to travel around Australia at the moment;
-both Qantas and Virgin got flexible booking due to covid
-booking.com got plenty of hotels with free cancelation.
-hire car companies also got free cancelation due to covid.

Always read the terms, state travel conditions and avoid booking through third party sites for flights, don't book flights in way advanced like pre covid.

I been travelling in SA, NSW, NT few times during the last 12 months without any issues. Just be prepared to change your travel path, its covid and its still around.

    • I’ll have to look at booking.com and similar.

I do need to book a 4bed property. Not many hotels have that available, and if they do, it’s the penthouse at a ludicrous nightly fee. This is why I am looking at Airbnb etc

      • Avoid Airbnb during the covid era, well then again any mass activities are problematic at the moment due to uncertainty.

  • I call the property management agency and ask. When I've done so they say no refund but ok to reschedule if either the origin or destination is under lock down or if a member of the traveling party is infected or having to isolate.

    Seems fair to me

    • Good idea. I called a few and they mentioned there policy remains (I.e no cancellations)

  • Hard to say regarding AirBnB but hotels have very good cancellation policies now regarding covid. As little as 48 hour notice.

In fact, the W in Brisbane cancelled my last 3 days while I was already staying there, since there was an imminent lockdown and I asked if I could leave lol

6 or 7k.. how many weeks you going for?

  • If you're concerned about loosing the cash of an interstate booking, have you considered how you'd handle being stranded interstate if the borders get closed while you're away?

    • Not sure I understand.

It would be a shame if I paid $6-7k and the day before travel there was a lockdown announced.

It won’t be the end of the world, but I think most people would prefer not to just kiss $7k goodbye

      • If the Victorian border closes on you, are you able to afford to stay interstate, I believe is the question.

        • Yes I can afford to stay interstate without an issue

    There is this for Adelaide;

As a fellow Victorian who has had to cancel numerous trips since 2020 - not many places will offer full refunds. I think airlines are still being good about it, but not so much for Airbnb / hotels.

I'm pretty sure most insurance covers won't cover you for covid related things as it's now a 'known' issue.

    Good luck!

  • Where do you think you are staying for 7k?

    • Not sure I understand your question.

If you are simply asking where I am looking to book for $7k, then it’s beachside in QLD.

Booking a nice spacious house for 9 nights is around this mark.

  • The replies about price are always interesting.

It’s like I am taking money from others to fund my own trip

  • lol all these people still traveling…no wonder why the virus is still alive…and upgraded itself to something more dangerous…stay at home, geezus….you don't need to visit friends or families, or need a holiday somewhere; screw 'em!

Also, insurance companies are there to make money of ya, they're not gonna make any money if you catch the damn virus and die from it, because they'll be paying out on it instead. So I guess unless you want free money from insurance companies, sure sign up and intentionally catch the virus and profit - free money! That is if you find one that covers this….

    • Speak for yourself. I enjoy having a break away.

Considering the case numbers in Australia, I see no issues travelling.

Or do you propose we lock ourselves up for the next 2 years at home?

      • -1

Well, seeing how I've just been doing just that for the most of these months, yes - I don't mind locking myself up for the next 2 years. Nothing to do outside anyways….shitty people, shitty places…no money to burn….etc.

Isn’t it great that we can all make our own choices

          • @popcornready: Not really making a choice if your superior locks down the nation….

  • We are currently travelling at Moama, NSW from Melbourne. Yes some accommodations are not clear what would happen for our booking charges if bother restriction is exercised in the day we travelled. I rang booking.com ( where we booked the accommodation) the staff could not assure me anything. Finally I phoned directly to the accommodation motel whose staff told me the best way he could help was that he would make the accommodation date ( confirming) for me on the date we planned to come over, and not payment would be made till we arrived. His suggestion is the best. We arrived yesterday without a hitch, and I made payment in his office.

  • If you are injured or fallen seriously ill while on trip, would travel insurance cover for your emergency transportation?

  • I have a booked holiday house to Phillip island and a snow trip to Mt Buller next month…

I'm in Victoria, I also wonder is there domestic travel insurance that cover the costs loss due to a lockdown. (already prepaid both accommodations in full)

    • Just think about the crazy cost of that potential domestic travel insurance.
