  • a good ipad air 4 64 gb deal is around 680 dollars for those thinking about it

      It's an expired deal.

it acts as a reference point if people want to wait

so for 300 dollars more, you get an extra 64gb storage, face id, 120hz screen, better cam, worse single-core performance, similar multicore performance, better GPU i think ~30% ish

    • +3

the 2020 Ipad pro is a much better option than the air 4 just because of the120hz display

      • +1

2021 ipad pro has much better value for performance for 200 bucks more and you can use discounted giftcards or cash back or education discount

        • +3

Whilst this is true, arguably for most people (and myself included, despite thinking of buying the new ipad), the processor in the 2020 is plenty for the media device that it will eventually become.

          • @ATangk: i think the difference will show since there is a big gap in single-core performance 50% increase which matters a lot later on since most applications use a single core.
The point is tho, if you wait for 2021 pro to go on sale, it will be similar to this price, maybe 50-100 dollars more.

@XanderYuan: My 2017 ipad pro runs all things perfectly fine, zero lag. And thats running an A10x. iPads, limited with the current iPadOS, can do everything fine as it is, the M1 is just overkill.

              • @ATangk: If you run it side by side you will see a difference in everyday speed. E.g opening an app. Unless you have a comparison point you won’t know how good it held up to the new iPads….

                • @XanderYuan: I have an iPhone 12. It’s like 5% faster than my iPhone X. Sometimes more but it’s… it honestly doesn’t matter. It’s only battery life that suffers with the age.

Just because it’s faster doesn’t mean it needs to be. There’s a point of cost vs gain and the iPad Pro for the general user is far surpassing that.

                  • -1

@ATangk: it's more for the future, iPhone's performance will increase comparatively every year and app developers don't mind putting more stuff into them because of how powerful they are. Eventually, they get bloated enough and you will suffer if you have an older model. Again, I want to emphasize the price difference of 200 bucks excluding any discounts for a 50% increase in single core, 100% increase in multicore and GPU along with 2gb extra ram.

    • not with 4 gee though

      • Correct Pro has 6gb, Air has 4gb RAM.

  • The M1 is overpowered and not much more expensive, but this itself is too overpowered for general use. Ehhh, it's an okay deal

For my purpose, I like to download photos and videos from my camera and edit them on the go. I don't want to spend too much on an iPad as I already have a Macbook Pro. The ipad 8th gen is too basic, the Air 64GB is barely enough in term of disk space. This Pro 11 128GB hits the sweet spot between cost and capabilities, being under $1K.

  • Reckon it's worth getting a 12.9 inch and using it as a second monitor with Duet Display when not using it to watch the youtubes?

Or is that a bit wasteful and the 11" should do.

Reference computer that it'd be connected to is a 11" Macbook Air.

    • +1

As a second monitor, size does matter. I am using an ipad 8th gen and find it not big enough as second screen, for my use anyway.

ipad pro or macbook air M1?

    • Only you can tell based on your use case.

      Touchscreen vs no touch screen?
      iPadOS vs MacOS ?
      1 thunderbolt vs 2 thunderbolt?

    • If you ask Apple, the answer is "both" :)

    • I just visited an apple store to answer this question for myself the other day. I found Mac os to be incredibly painful to use as a Windows user. Not being able to maximise windows without going into fullscreen and losing dock access, not being able to quickly and easily arrange windows side by side and a bunch of other things meant it was a prohibitively frustrating experience. Then of course there's the lack of touch screen. Ipad os on the other hand maked a lot of sense to me. It all depends on your use-case obviously. I left absolutely certain that I'm not a mac guy!

      • There are some apps that do all those things (except for the touch of course). I am a recent first time Mac user, the power and value of the M1 units won me over. I had to download Middleclick - to do middle mouseclick for new tabs, and Magnet for the window snapping.

Macs are a learning curve, I've found it worthwhile though.

I don’t know what to do

Remove any screen protectors…or get an exorcist.

      • Time for the exorcist I guess

    • Take it to the forums?

      What have we here

  • bought OP, thanks 1

  • Still a top notch tablet and even better with the discount. Only competitor is the newest M1 version.

  • Anyone notice the price in store? Thanks!

    • It is about the same in store. I think it was 260 dollar discount to iPad pro 11.

  • +1

Pardon my ignorance, is this the same tablet here?

    • Looks like it, but in space grey.

      • Thanks! Officeworks might be a good buy for non Costco members

  • Waiting for mini pro with M1

  • No headphone jack on ipads too? Is that true

    • No headphone jack on iPad Pro, Air models. Standard and Mini still have them.
