Hopefully this means the tide had turned and that prices will start to come down post the Lunar New Year…

    • Nah, it's likely overflow stock from the group buy deal they did a month or so back.

    • I miss my cheap $100(ish) wd20earx, they're down to 139 atm (PCCG), I think they went up to like 250 after the flooding, so not horrible, but still more than I'm willing to pay…

  • i need 4 TB .

    • +1

Alot of controller chips will only see 3.2tb

    • What you do with 4TB HDD? My SSD is 128 GB and it's still 60 Gb free

      • +4

i have a massive collection of movies.
but yeah not if SOPA has anything to do with it

      • Digital blurays are 30-50gb each. Im about to fill 6tb myself, just aiting for the prices to come down to upgrade

    • +9

Megaupload's down, bro. We don't need that 4TB anymore.

      • +2

        :(
        DAMN YOU SOPA!!
        shake's fist

      • Newsgroup is still operating so well…for now ;;)

      • Fileserve, filesonic, netupload.

*This will probably be deleted for "Enabling" piracy.

  • The WD 3TB elements is only $199 from various retailers JB, officeworks etc so that's worth considering before buying this.

Apples and Oranges mate. The WD is an external slower drive.

      • Not if you remove it from the caddy!

        • I could be wrong but I think if you remove it from the caddy it doesn't have regular SATA connectors and therefore can't easily be used as an internal drive.

EDIT It looks like a possibly previous version of the Elements 2TB version does have regular ports and uses a USB adapter: http://www.gearhack.com/myink/ViewPage.php?file=/docs/Wester…

          So disregard!

I bought an external 3tb goflex and used it internally fine

        • Ambiguous - Was that the 120$ one? Maybe 4-5 months ago? best deal ever :D

        • Haha yeah. And my OW didnt add in shipping so mine ended up even cheaper :)

    • They are usually the green drives or something similar. Slower to use even when directly connected to a SATA drive. Also if you remove it from the caddy you lose your warranty.

      • Actually you can reassemble most drives to retain warranty, only a few have to be actually broken open.

    • This deal is for an internal SATA3. Do external drives offer the same speed if you use them internally?

I thought the reason why they are cheaper is because they have inferior speed (afterall, what's the point of making it SATA3 capable when it's only intended for USB 2/3?)

Wow seeing this is crazy after ordering those $118 3TB WD's from B&H Photo last year :)

  • +2

Can you guarentee that these drives are infact Seagate? :P

  • 7200RPM drives are not intended to be used for "just storage". This drive is more suited for more intensive read/write tasks whereas your typical cheaper 5400RPM drive is fine for storage but nothing too read/write intensive

  • +2

i thought it would be 4TB next?
    like from 1 to 2, and 2 to 4

    • +1

As said above, their are limitations on some controllers that can't handle 4Tb, as time progresses they will all be gone and the sale of the 4Tb+ should go unhindered.

Plus remember you had 80Gb, then 100Gb, then 120Gb, then 180Gb, then 200Gb and so on. It doesn't just double.

      • i remember my dad had an old 386 PC or somthing that had a 16Gb hard drive!
        cost him thousands

  • How long is the warranty period? I've heard the warranty period for some seagate drives are now shortened.

    • The NetPlus site says 1 year but I'm fairly sure the manufacturer warranty is 2 year on these.

But yes, it used to be 5 year on this line.

      • Rep: what is the warranty on these? Are you only giving 1 year?

  • Hdd still a massive rip off ATM. I'll wait until supplies have returned to their normal output level. Definitely not a bargain

    • You're comparing with prices that are in the past, I.e, no longer available for now. Question is for people that need such a drive now, is this a bargain?

      • Just like the markets, you buy low and sell high. Right now the markets are high, so no bargain, no buying for me.

        • +1

And if someone needs or even just really wants one now… ?
