Good value CR2032 button cells

I've got a lot of things that need these cr2032.
From home automation sensors to thermometers to clocks.

I'm not sure where I should define these batteries. You can get them from Coles from energiser for like $4 for one battery. You can get them off eBay from China for $2 for a pack of 10. They probably don't work.

I had a pack of 10 that I bought when I was travelling overseas a few years ago and they seem to work fine. Not that there is any way to measure how long they last or compare.

I got a packet of 8 batteries from the local dollar store. Cost me $5. Completely sealed. Open the first battery didn't work. Tried it in a different device and finally found a thermometer which said it was low. Cut open the second one and exactly the same.

What would you suggest? Should I just stick with the known brands like energiZer?

Even they sell different packaging where the price varies and no real info if there's a difference.

Also, one sensor is in a sunroom where it gets hot like 36C. That battery seems to last less, tho we move that door a lot so maybe it's working harder. Is there a type of battery that's good in heat?

  • I think I bought button cells from Core Electronics which were good, though I didn't use them for long. CR2032 looks to be about $1.25 or $1.082 for 10+. Shipping may kill it for some though ($3 for me) unless you can do pickup at Newcastle.

I get them at Ikea. Don't know how much they are, but they are cheap.

    • +1 for IKEA. They're $5 for a pack of 8, and they last ages.

  • I get them off eBay. Probably not at the $2 for 10 price point. I can't remember the last price I paid. They do work, but I get the impression that they don't last as long.

My local Reject shop stocks them too and I've tried them and find that they perform adequately as well. Pretty much similar to the eBay ones I've gotten. I've also gotten genuine Panasonics or Energizers and while they do last longer, the price premium vs what I can get other brands for pretty much steers me towards the cheaper ones.

I buy Maxell or Tianqiu from Australian sellers on ebay. Used to purchase them from sellers in China. Takes too long and there's been too many lost shipments so I switched to local sellers instead.

For things like car remotes, etc, you're better off investing in a decent battery that might cost a little more. They don't need to be replaced that often anyway so are you really saving that much? For me, it's not worth the inconvenience of having to replace short-lifed/faulty/dead batteries frequently.

    • I just wonder if there is a life difference. And who's good.

I guess I'm referring to the usual name brands like Duracell/Energizer/Maxell/Panasonic versus the random stuff on ebay that is quite cheap, but often turns out to be a bit of a hit and miss.

I used the car remote as an example earlier. Imagine replacing the battery with a random ebay battery and two days later, you're out at night and the remote stops working or whatever. The brand name itself does form a significant part of the cost, but I'd rather pay that little extra to have that confidence that it's likely to work for a long time to come.

        • Duracell/Energizer are at coles, but Maxell/Panasonic you can only get online or $2 shops. There are many packaging types, so I wonder if some are fake too.

They could be fake, but I think that they could also be grey imports from a number of different markets where the cost is much lower.

    • You can probably get 20 of them for that price on ebay…

      • +2

And 16 of those 20 probably won't work, so it'll be the same.

        • I've only used 4 of the 20 thus far, and they all worked for at least a week…

You can define them in a dictionary…

  • I buy these

    • I buy these

      lol….

      • Sir, this is OzBargain. Nobody here buys those.

        • Why not? It's an investment to potentially avoid at least 18 years of payments 😊

  • Bunnings have sales instore or EBay ones from China
