Nice price for an awesome NAS but please, to anyone buying one of these be sure to create a new administrator account straight away and dream up a complex password to go with it because as per the QNAP boxes it seems all Synology NAS boxes are now equally prone to Ransomware attacks. Luckily hasn't happened to me but I know of it happening to others. There are obviously other things you can do too but using the built-in 'admin' account makes you a sitting duck so this is the quickest & easiest thing you can do to begin protecting yourself a little bit more. Oh and be sure to always make backups of your important/valuable data… never treat a single NAS box as a stand-alone backup device.

      This x 1000.

My in laws had their unpatched QNAP NAS that was reachable over the internet hacked, and subjected to the latest iteration of the ech0raix ransomware. All their photos and other documents were encrypted, and the ransom was about AUD1900 in BTC value the weekend they were hacked. It may have dropped somewhat due to the big crash in BTC values, but a problem nonetheless.

I am in the middle of a salvage operation to find other unencrypted copies that they have on other drives etc. and figuring out how much data they stand to lose. So messed up.

      • Were they using the personal cloud functionality or is it just enabled by default?

      • Data loss is the worst D:

I'd like to see some good deals on their cheaper NASes. These just seem super expensive to me, and overkill for most people's use cases in terms of processing capacity etc. I don't know anybody personally who needs to transcode!

    • If you're just after some basic network storage, some ISP-supplied routers are able to make a USB hard drive (whether purchased as such, or in a caddy/dock) connected to them available over the network.

Not sure if too many do now post-NBN, but if you've got an old router or your current one supports it, it could be a relatively cheap option.

      • Thanks for this. I currently use a 12TB WD Elements drive attached to my NUC, and run Fedora Linux Server. I also have a CuBox (Pi-like thing) with a couple of 2TB laptop drives attached), but what I am after is some cheap RAID, which you can't do over USB. My old routers wouldn't be able to give me that functionality, hence the desire for a lower end NAS.

        • but what I am after is some cheap RAID, which you can't do over USB

Just make sure you're after RAID for the right reasons - RAID is NOT a backup! - it only protects you from disk failure. Not from corruption, deletion, ransom-ware, bit-rot … nada.

    • I'm the same boat. Mid range Synology's never seem to go on sale and they just end up being super poor value compared to deals like this one.

Running a DS918+ as my personal movie server. Really good product from Synology!👍

  • Can you combine these codes with a ebay giftcard / voucher?

    • Just wondering if anyone knows before I go and signup for ebay plus.
