Sofa Bed Suggestions (Similar to IKEA Friheten)

My husband and I are moving into our new home soon and we are looking for a comfortable sofa bed for our lounge area.

We love the concept of the sofa bed trundle mechanism in the IKEA Friheten but we don't think that it's particularly comfortable.

We have also looked at and considered the Fantastic Furniture Downtown and a couple of other variants from eBay, but none of them look any more comfortable or sturdy than the IKEA variant.

We are also wondering whether the Koala sofa bed would be a good fit for us, but we are hesitant to order one and go through the whole returns process if we don't like it.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

We are hoping to find something that's comfortable, well built and easy to operate.

The reason they’re not comfortable is because of the frame required.

The frame digs in at awkward spots because one mattress is usually wider than the other. This also means when two people use it, one person gets a much narrower mattress, and because they’re separate mattresses, it’s no better for a single person to use the sofa bed element than just sleeping on a comfortable long and wide couch.

As someone who has been a guest on several types of couches and sofa beds, these are by far the worst. The couch as it is is always better.

The best one I ever slept on was a simple ikea couch where the whole couch folded out into a futon (much like the little kids couch things that fold out), and so you slept with your head where the back of the couch was, as opposed to sleeping the length of the couch… but I can’t seem to find any like this on ikeas website.

Edit: a similar one seems to be called the Solsta but no longer available.

    • Thanks for the advice. The Koala sofa appears to be one of the most comfortable in its bed form.

  • Why not just a decent couch? Surely you don't kick him out of bed that often 😂

    • Haha thankfully neither of us have ever spent a night on the couch! We just want the space available for guests.

      • Eh, get yourselves a comfortable, good looking couch, and then a self-inflating inflatable mattress for anyone who's too drunk to drive

        • ORRR. Put the inflatable mattress on top of the friheten!

We have one of these and they are a tad firm, but the mechanism is great. We got ours in the scratch and dent areas so we got it for less than $400.

To combat the firmness we bought a puffy underlay to make it more comfortable and then put a blanket over the top as a cover. It makes it comfortable and the blanket covers the rather weird orange and beige colour it came in.

We have created a “snug” area with our place so we have put the sofa in there. We, mostly, leave it in “bed mode” so it acts as a three seat chaise lounge. Room for the man, me and the two cats. If you do put the trundle down it is nice slot for a table.

    • Was just about to say the same thing! We put a mattress topper on it.

The problem with the traditional sofa beds which pull out (that are similarly priced) is that they start to sag in the middle and it's uncomfortable for two people because you end up rolling into each other.

We just liked the easy conversion method.

        Like your moniker.

        • Haha thanks! Yeah fair enough.

Those koala beds look like a bigger version of the 20 buck ones from kmart for kids!

Are you in Sydney? If yes, you can have a look at Monster Furniture in Merrylands, they have a couch in a similar mechanism as the Friheten. I recommend looking at their FB page. Another place that has this is Diamond Furniture (Wentworth Point and St. Peters)

    • Thanks for this. We'll hit up MF tomorrow. Diamond Furniture - does it have a website or a fb page? A Google search gives me a couple of options but not sure which one is right.
