Sound System Recommendations

Bought the 65CX in December. I've got a old 5.1 1080P LG sound system similar to this one, don't have the exact model, but it is 3d Blu-ray, and has the Bluetooth wireless rear speakers.

Question, should I just invest in a new home theatre system, wireless rear speakers are important as I can't have cables running to the rear speakers. And recommendations if you have any?

Or get a decent sound bar with included rear speakers?

What are people running with this TV?

Why do you want/need a new speaker system? Soundbar will never be as good as a surround sound system.

    • I'm having issues with the current sound system, I'm using TOSLINK audio return, but the sounds keep cutting out, on the Switch it's even worse, sound cutting out every 2 seconds.

      • Have you tried new cables or different input/output? I would give that a go before replace the entire setup.

        • brand new TOSLINK and highspeed HDMI cables.

  • The rear speaks will need power such that possibly with some smart cable management, you could have the receiver wires included. With an amplifier/receiver, you'd only need the receiver wires to connect to the rear speaks too as that will also power them. Eg. Rear speaker with stand and just run the receiver wire along the skirt of the walls between the devices.

I had an old 5.1 setup which I recently replaced with new speakers (Polk) and new Devon amp. I was considering a soundbar Sonos, but it will never beat the sounds of a independent setup. It is definitely much cleaner and attractive though, but part of my replacement included building new cabinets so it's all cleanly tucked away with new cooling fans for air intake/exhaust.

  • Used to own the 65C9. Definitely invest in a sound system, it'll probably outlast your TV. I spent a couple of years building up a high end second hand system and it's fantastic. I spent around 2k and have a system that is about 8k total for the (inflated) original RRP. Made up of VAF / Denon / Pioneer / SVS / KEF components but that was a lot of research / patience / running around to assemble.

What's your budget? Something like this is an excellent start IMO at $1100. I bought one of these sets for $400 second hand on Gumtree and it served me well for a couple of years until the upgrade bug bit me. Moved the lot on to a good friend who used it as a sound system for his HT as well as his engagement party and it worked beautifully for a venue that was maybe 30m x 10m.

I ended up buying it again new on sale at Harvey Norman, minus the amp, on sale for $600. That was for a secondary system.

No experience with wireless speakers sorry.

    • The YHT-3A looks decent for my needs and it's around the right price.

  • I got jack of cables and stupidly-big floor-standing mains with wired surrounds, and replaced an amp-powered 5.1 system with the JBL Bar 9.1 (https://www.jbl.com.au/JBL+BAR+9.1+TWS-.html) and haven't looked back. Both the bar and detachable surrounds have up-firing speakers for Atmos-enabled content, and the excellent subwoofer handles the deep stuff magnificently. I will never go back to a large system again.

  • Great timing OP, I'm also interested in a new sound system but have no idea where to start. If there's a 'pack' including amp and speakers out there that people recommend that isn't huge and ugly but sounds good, I'd love to know.

  • If you need wireless rears (assuming power is okay) you need to go with a Denon/Marantz HEOS system or a Yamaha MusicCast system for a receiver speaker system. Or a host of soundbar options sound as Klipsch, Bose, Samsung, LG, Yamaha (400 only), JBL.

If you need true wireless (no power) you have to go JBL 9.1 or the HEOS system they had one speaker you could buy an optional battery pack for you can still find online through a few retailers.

Alternatively, if you have attic access you could go two ceiling speakers (that can be aimed) for your surrounds so they are out of the way. It’s not as good as surround speakers on the side but is cleaner and some people with the right set up report it sounds quite good (or in wall speakers).
