What Graphic Card Should I Get for DOTA2?

Hi all,

My son likes to play DOTA2 and he complains that it's lagging in his currently PC.

The current PC is HP compaq pro 6300 small form factor with intel i5-2400, NVIDIA GeForce GT710 and 8GB RAM.

I think I am going to replace the HDD with SSD and upgrade the GPU. Do you think this is enough or I should change the whole PC?

Is there a low profile GPU that will suit DOTA2? I had a look at MSY website and was thinking of 2GB GT 1030 MSI (Low Profile) or 2GB GT 1030 Asus (Low Profile) but I am not sure whether this will be enough for DOTA2 or not.

Any recommendations? Thank you.

  • What's your budget?

    • I am not sure yet as I have no idea what should be upgraded at the moment. Would just GPU works or possibly something else?

2GB VRAM isn’t enough - but the 1030 is still better than the ancient GT710.

I’d recommend the GTX 1050ti for a little extra which should run Dota at Med-High at 60+ FPS.

    • Trouble is finding a GTX1050Ti low profile. You'd more easily find a GTX 1650 LP but you're paying premium prices and possibly waiting too.
The 1030 can be found quite easily and if the prices aren't good, they're not a complete rip off.

      • I was going to get one from MSY but as you said, I am not sure which one is low profile and will fit. Is there GTX1050 low profile? I can't find it in MSY part list.

    • 4GB GTX 1050 TI ASUS PHOENIX? Is this a low profile? Do you know if it will fit in HP compaq pro 6300 small form factor?

It's very hard to buy a new graphics card, i agree with nxllson go for a used grahpics card GTX1050ti

    • Second hand market isn't much better, especially for the more specialised low profile GPUs

Best value now is to get a laptop in this climate. Something old and cheap with a 1050/1650/1660 will have more than enough power to play DOTA2 for little money.

    • Any laptop recommendations?

  • Change the Game settings to be lower resolution. Therefore it is no lagging.

    • It was a low end card 7 years ago when it came out. I don't think changing the res will help much.

      • MINIMUM:
        OS: Windows 7 or newer
Processor: Dual core from Intel or AMD at 2.8 GHz
        Memory: 4 GB RAM
        Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600/9600GT, ATI/AMD Radeon HD2600/3600
        DirectX: Version 9.0c
        Network: Broadband Internet connection
        Storage: 15 GB available space

Surely your card is much better than this. Lower resolution, and lower effect, etc. It will help a lot.
Need to find the best balance between no lagging and image quality

        • dota works on intel hd 4000 graphics, is it great no. but it works

    • I told my son this! He said tried and didn't like it. Hahaha.

  • Buy this ssd if it's still in stock.

Ram may be a cheap upgrade as well but upgrade the storage and gpu first.

    • Will do. Thank you.

When you buy a 1030 just make sure it is the GDDR5 version and not the GDDR3 one. There is quite a difference between them. Where are you based? I have some PCs for sale that may just do the job (including a 1030 with GDDR5).

    • The CPU upgrade is really silly to be honest, what exactly are you going to upgrade to? a i7 2700k (it should probably not be in a SFF anyway) is worse compared to a i3 9100 and more expensive. You are probably going to pay 150 for the CPU, 50 for the SSD, 50 for more ram. I can sell you something better that is basically new at the same price with better specs if you are in Sydney. People here can judge if it is a good deal or not.

      • What would you recommend? I am quite open minded. Hahaha.

    • I am in Sydney. Which GPU would you recommend? I was going to get one from MSY.
