[LatitudePay] NVIDIA Shield TV 4K HDR Android TV Streaming Media Player $199.95 (Was $249.95) + Post ($0 C&C) @ Harvey Norman

120

Have been wanting one of these for awhile to get the most out of my new Yamaha receiver.

This was the best application of the Latitude Pay promo for this product.

A quick search of OzBargain showed that last time it was this price was back in December 2020 at $198 from Harvey Norman.

Keep in mind this is just the 4K Streamer and not the pro version.

  • The new Apple TV is just $249. Shows how outrageous the $400 RRP for the Pro version was.

    • +1

Does the new Apple TV have AI upscaling to 4K?

      • +1

If that's worth the premium, sure go for it (even then Pro not this Tube). I would have thought people had their own 4K media if they are looking for things like this.

        • +9

The upscaling is actually really good and worth the cost. Pro vs standard is a matter of use cases. Never buy an Apple product unless there is no other option. Even then, try to build your own option before buying Apple.

          • +1

@justchase: How would you build your HDMI 2.1 device for $249?

            • @askbargain: I wouldn't. Only reason I can see for HDMI 2.1 is to run 8K TV's. Which output more information than your eyes can take in. So what's the point? But if I had to build a streaming device I'd probably just go the raspberry pi 4 route. Failing that, I'm really happy with my Nvidia shield.

              • -2

                @justchase: HDMI 2.1 isn't just for 8K. Raspberry Pi 4 can barely decode 4K.

                • @askbargain: In terms of home entertainment it is. And Raspberry Pi 4 can easily handle 4K for home entertainment purposes, which is what we're talking about. That being said, I wouldn't do that either unless I had to.

                  • -1

@justchase: For the price, you won’t even consider a chromecast? What a joke.

In terms of home entertainment, RPi 4 doesn’t even have HDR.

                • +1

@askbargain: Raspberry Pi 4 hardware can EASILY decode 4k. Software just needs a little catching up.. libreelec 10 beta came out last month, which brings 4k HDR support.

Still wouldn't recommend right now, but give it 6months, and it'd probably be an equivalent (For media purposes) And significantly cheaper option compared to the shield or apple tv.

                  • @mahdoo: But it’s the same price as a chromecast, which has better software. Quite funny how are defending nvidia inflating their prices.

                    • @askbargain: Oh I'm not. The shield is outrageously expensive. It's a good product, and I'd argue is market leader, but still outrageously expensive.

I'm defending the Raspberry Pi 4. The new Chromecast with Google TV is also a good product.

@mahdoo: But it’s the same price as a chromecast, which has better software. Quite funny how are defending nvidia inflating their prices.

That's now, and that might be the case for your usecase. The Raspberry Pi 4 will be on par with the chromecast w google tv soon enough, and will still be a viable option for people to consider.

                    • @askbargain: Dude, choose the things you want to choose, but you clearly don't actually understand all these things as well as you think you do.

                  • @mahdoo: This. Raspberry pi 4 is more capable than a lot of people realise.

                    • -1

@justchase: Not capable of HDR lmao

                      • @askbargain: Actually the pi 4 hardware is capable of HDR, but the software is still in development. Which means it's just a matter of time. You really have to learn to quit while you're behind, you dunce.

  • How do I revoke my upvote. I thought it was a pro version.

    • Votes tab at the top of this page.

  • For anyone who is wondering, the Pro version is $299.95 after the $50 Latitude Pay discount.

  • +1

I have this model and really like it. For whatever that's worth.

  • I have the older 2017 version and love it. However, if you are not running a plex server or something similar I would think another alternative would be cheaper. I don't think this one does the server function either, you need the pro to do that.

    • Im getting this because of my Plex Server and my Hisense TV sometimes struggles to decode higher resolution / higher sound quality files.

  • this or a chrome cast for around $75?

Im getting the shield because of Ethernet, AI Upscaling and just more powerful. Apparently the Shield will get Google TV later.

      • do you notice the no upscale for 4k? price is nearly 3x

        • Are you saying the Shield doesnt have upscaling?

If thats the case, the Shield (Non Pro) does have AI Upscaling.

          • @nedski: no i mean the chromecast doesnt have upscale to 4k but is that noticeable?

            • +1

@SS625: Oh I wouldnt know as I dont have a Google TV. However if you google Nvidia Shield AI Upscaling. The reviews and comments on that have been quite positive.

              • @nedski: triple the price, and most content i watch (youtube) doesnt have 4k. i might just be a cheapo and get the chromecast, thanks for the info

                • @SS625: The point of AI Upscaling is that it can upscale non 4K stuff (such as youtube) to 4K. But maybe the Google TV with the current promotions which may bring it down to $70 may be better suited for you.

                • +1

@SS625: The 4K upscaling is boss. The point is that you watch youtube content at 1080p and the shield upscales it to 4k. And it does a remarkably good job at it.

    • There is also the new MeCool KM2 that's worth checking out (~$82 AUD delivered with code FBKM2) - the first MeCool to be Netflix certified, and has Dolby licensing too:

      https://www.mecoolonline.com/products/2021-mecool-newest-and…

    • I was keen on the chromecast but then discovered that it wouldn't do audio passthrough for DD/DTS from Kodi, that's a deal breaker for my setup.

Also tried using the native Kayo app on it at the in-laws and it was good the first run, but after that wouldn't load. Shame, because the consolidated home UI is awesome.
Still think that when my FireTV finally kicks it I'll have to replace with a Shield.

  • Is this a good device to connect to my OLED in the lounge room and stream games form my computer in a different room?
Or is it for completely different things?

    • The Nvidia Shield Pro may be better suited for that. But I havent looked too closely into it.

      • You're correct. The Shield Pro is much better suited to game streaming. The base tube can do it, just not as well.

  • This nonpro version is crap. Don't buy it. Spend more and get the Pro.

  • My account limit is $150 how can I purchase this?
