    No iPad mini annoucement?! Boo

    • I was waiting for this too :(

  • +2

I am very tempted to buy the iMac, good price to be honest. They remind me of the old transparent iMacs but feels like an iPad. Wonder how much better they are in performance to the MacBooks. Seems like its the same.

    • I really like the look of them, too

  • +1

Those imac colours sure are something. After 10 years I'm a bit disappointed they still don't have any imacs over 30 inches and they've seemingly ignored the 27.

    • +1

30 Inch iMac with M1 will be announced later this year
Apple Always does smaller one first then refreshes larger model later same year.

have done it since the white iMacs where a thing

      • yeah, i'm going to wait for the larger screen imacs but man, they look freaking nice

  • +1

I am a fan of apple.. but nothing announced is of interest.

New iMacs look terrible and cheap. (specs are a joke apart from M1 Chip)
The cheapest one comes without Ethernet and no additional USB 3 ports (only get the 2X Thunderbolt Ports)

Apple TV gets a new remote (a remote which on its own costs more than a chromecast)

    AirTag… Tile does it better

Ipad Pro… New Screen is nice on bigger model but thats really about it.

Nothing really of note worth being excited over, unless you were already planning to buy something this would not motivate any existing owners to upgrade thats for sure. Zero value in anything offered.

    • +2

      ok

      AirTag… Tile does it better

They probably didn't want to get sued.

    • +3

Jimbo, did you look into the Airtag? I'm curious how Tile does it better? I've not used it before, nor really have much use for these but I might get one for S&G's. The Airtag looks really complex and easy to use - is Tile easier? Does it integrate anywhere near as seamlessly as the Airtags?

      • +7

Yeah I was wondering the same thing.

        Tile = Bluetooth

AirTag = Bluetooth + Ultra Wideband

If you're all-in on Apple (i.e. have a device with the U1 chip), AirTag is 100% better than Tile.

And that's ignoring that even without Ultra Wideband, Apple's is probably just going to be "better" than Tile's.

Then you've got all the fluff - style options, free laser engraving…

The AirTag is also smaller than almost all of Tile's options (32mm vs 35/42mm), and is 25% lighter than the Tile Pro (11g vs 6/15g)

The NFC "lost mode" also sounds interesting.

        • +2

Also AirTag works with other devices - if you leave you wallet (which has the tag) at the shops, if someone with an iPhone is around, it will communicate with their phone and ping the location data to you, anonymously.

          • +1

@SaveMeMoney17: Tile does something similar, although a point of difference would be implementation.

Tile requires the people "discovering" your tag to have the Tile app (and it able to operate in the background).

For AirTag, I presume it would be any iDevice (iPhone, probably iPad, possibly even Macs), with the correct settings enabled, which I would assume would be on by default.

I'd also hope they set it up that if you want to use AirTags yourself, you have to have it enabled to find other people's AirTags - why should you get the benefit of the system without helping others.

The NFC "lost mode" is additional but.

You can also set it so someone can get your contact info by tapping your AirTag with an NFC-capable smartphone — that’s the same technology that lets people pay for things with their phones.

The wording of that also makes me think the NFC contact information will work with any device, not just Apple devices.

Now it's just to wait for all the AirTag held-to-ransom posts…

        • Everything on paper about the Airtag sounded really awesome, I just have no experience with the Tile. I'm all-in Apple as well, so it's much better choice for me.

        • +2

Also, not all the Tiles have replaceable batteries.

          • @try2bhelpful: Yeah, the Slim and the Sticker. I didn't bother mentioning them as they're not really comparable.

The Slim is card-sized, so designed to go in a card slot in your wallet/purse.
The Sticker gets literally stuck to whatever you want your Tile on.

Both are lighter than the AirTag (the Sticker significantly so). But as you pointed out, both have non-replaceable batteries. I also presume the Sticker can't really be re-located.

            • @Chandler: Just highlighting as I did think about the Tile when they came out but a “disposable” item is a “no go” from me.

              • @try2bhelpful:

Just highlighting as I did think about the Tile when they came out but a “disposable” item is a “no go” from me.

Likewise - I ended up getting TrackRs. Battery life sucked but.

And then what anyway - throwing batteries away instead of a whole Tile? Yes, I know battery recycling is a thing, and I do recycle my batteries. And I believe you can even get rechargeable coin cells nowadays…?

Tile is better now with the Pro and the Mate having a replaceable battery.

                • @Chandler: Would like to track down some recycleable coin cells. We have some micro bug things we bought for toys for the cats but the batteries don't last very long. The problem with cats is they like to watch something for a loooooong time before they pounce on it. Wastes a lot of batteries.

                  • @try2bhelpful: Yeah. I've got all my AA & AAAs covered with IKEA LADDAs, but haven't gotten around to finding suitable button cells.

RS Components and Element14 seem to have some, but they all look like they're specific to particular devices (extra tags etc on them).

                    • @Chandler: Sucks doesn't it, given a lot of devices are going to buttons. However, there is a real problem with kids, and pets, swallowing the button batteries so they are, probably, ensuring people don't have them hanging around.

He just started with "I am a fan of apple.." so that we wont call his bull right after. Good try jonny!

    • You must be fun at parties.

  • +2

Where is Karen on this thread? Damn she's late.

    • 4-pack AirTiles
    • iPad Pro 12.9" (to replace my 2018 Pro)

One announcement I wish we could get here is Apple Card :(

    • +1

Wont say which bank .. but my next door neighbours job at the bank he works at is launching apple card here as a partnership with Apple

      • Hmm. Of the big four, it'll be CBA that's most likely, but they baulked at Apple Pay fees, so probably not them

        My guess it's Macquarie.

  • +1

iMac redesign looks pretty funky. Been waiting for a redesign for years. Think I'll wait for an M2 chip though. Every computer with the M1 so far has been capped at 8GB RAM so I suspect the first gen chip has a limit to how much RAM it supports ..?

    • +2

16Gb is an optional upgrade so it's not a hard limit. It's certainly disappointing though. I feel like 16gb should be minimum for a $2k computer.

      • Ahh you're right! I thought they were always 8GB for some reason, but that's just the default. Yes, 16GB is the minimum I'd be getting these days. Though I do a bit of music making (hobby) so it's probably enough for just browsing the web, watching content etc..

    ECG IS FINALLY HERE!!!

  • +3

Apple have also reduced the price of some accessories and MacBooks. The MacBook Air started at $1599 and is now $1499, with the education pricing for the base model dropping from $1439 to $1349. I think it's time to replace my 2010 MacBook Pro.

  • My thoughts:
    - iMac is "okay" but far-from perfect. That processor is "slow" in a non-mobile scale, especially the lack of eGPU or dGPU graphics options.
    - iMac is slightly small screen, the hinge doesn't fold low to the table, no touchscreen, the white bezels, lack of iconic logo, and glass chin aren't very good looking
    - iMac priced a little too high. Lot's of missed opportunities. I think Apple is either going to let fans down, or are holding bigger/better things to come in the next 12 months

—iPhone mini/12, new colour is okay/meh

—-iPad Pro 11, it's a mixed bag. Very cool but very expensive, in fact, too expensive. Besides the M1 chipset, its not really an upgrade for other iPad Pro owners.

—iPad Pro 13 inch. It's basically a MacBook Pro competitor, with a touchscreen! The new Synthetic-OLED display is cutting edge. Price wise its actually competitive (as long as you have the right RAM/Storage option). However, I feel like its obligatory to add a Quality "hard" Keyboard, and an Apple Pen, which throws the price competitiveness out the window. The biggest drawback I see from this, is the inability to replace iPadOS with macOS. There's no technical reason that it cannot run Rosetta2, or other Professional Applications.

—ECG on Apple Watch is coming. Neato!

—AirTag is pretty expensive, but I dig it. Could be worth it for many people.

—Apple TV 4K. I wrote about this back late last year, and all the rumours I said have come out correct. Kudos to me. I think its a good device and fair price. Time to give the Nvidia Shield TV Pro a much deserved ass-kikin/competition.

—Overall, this Spring Loaded event was good. Some neat upgrades, and a few regrets as is customary.

    • The bigger iPad uses mini-LED instead of OLED. It is a completely different technology.

      • Yeah, I mixed it up with "microLED" as per all the recent rumours.
miniLED is not microLED, clearly. Their XDR screen is like an LCD on steroids, and competitive against OLED screens. But not good enough to surpass or replace OLEDs entirely, that's what the microLED screens were meant to accomplish if we're able to find a way to mass produce them.

        • Which OLED 13 inch screen has 1000 nits of full screen brightness?

    • How has the ATV4K changed other than a new remote and slightly faster processor? All the codec support and lack of lossless audio is still the same. I've got the current model and have no reason to upgrade, the Shield still blows it out of the water with its ability to pass through lossless audio

      • I think the only other difference is it supports 4K HDR @ 60Hz, instead of 30Hz.

        • The old one sometimes struggled with 4K, and had lots of issues with HDR content. The Dolby Atmos support was pretty spotty too. I think the newer chip, and the HDMI 2.1 protocol helps the Apple TV6 achieve what the Apple TV4K failed to do.

There's other improvements like Bt 5, Wifi 6, and the new Siri remote. The added performance is also neat, I could see this as a neat emulation machine. Just sideload your Apps (or jailbreak) and you should be able to play anything. Sooner or later. I wouldn't hold my breath for PS2, Xbox, 360, PS3, WiiU, Switch, Windows10 emulation… those require a lot more software development. But what's possible are: Atari, MAME, Sega, SNES, GBA, DoS, N64, DS, PS1, DreamCast, PSP, 2DS, GameCube, to the Nintendo Wii.

          • @Kangal: Sorry but the old one did not struggle with 4k at all - literally everything I threw at it, it played it without any issue. Absolutely no issue with HDR or apples container of Atmos either. It’s rated right up next to the shield for a reason.

It's insane that people will have to buy an iMac with 8gb of RAM

  • Any deal with the last version iPad Pro then?
