Nintendo 3DS Console - $189 @ Harvey Norman

540

After a bit of a research at other AU based game stores, dept stores and their respective websites, I found out that Harvey Norman's website is showing the cost of the console at "starting from $226" when you use their search engine, but if you actually click to open the actual page of the item, the price is showing as "starting from $189"

I called them up and got confirmation from them that this is indeed true and I bought a Cosmos black one from HN Werribee at $189. Not sure if the red one would cost more but they only had stock on the black or blue.

I think a few stores had them at this price over x'mas but past that period, stores were listing them back to around $220-$230 each so I think this is a good deal if you're looking for one.

i got mine for $176 at Harvey Norman in November last year. Just waiting for NDS 3D XL

    • +3

why the -ve votes? you can probably negotiate it down to this price. i didn't even neg this deal.

      • +5

people tend to neg here is you say something slightly different which is pretty dumb. As you're just posting what deal you got which i think is good.

    • -1

People say Vita is competing with 3DS, I'm with you, it's competing with the next gen DS, but I don't think it's going to be 3DS XL.

  • I went to HN two weeks ago and got one hot pink for $189.00

  • Only pink is $189 online so thats at +vote

  • Yeah pink. Hmm, hate the colour, but really want a 3ds.

  • +1

I heard Nintendo is flogging off stock of the 3DS to release the improved updated model very soon this year

    • -7

improved updated model very soon this year

I doubt anything can improve the life of 3DS. Casual/portable gaming's gone to iOS (and Android).
3D's proven itself to be a short-lived gimmick.
Granted Nintendo's own games are well made and if they're smart, they'll port them to the mentioned platforms.

      • +2

        yawn

      • -4

why the neg on him? i totally agree with what he's saying. I was really into buying a 3ds after trying it out. but i recently bought a galaxy note and there SOOOO many apps and games to play around on it, i dont think i'll find the time to touch another portable console.

        • +9

Because opinions like that are misinformed and should be kept off these deals.

        • +4

yeah… nintendo should support competitors on their products instead of their own… herp derp also if you want to put forward a strong argument don't reference wikipedia as a reliable source… it has sold over 16 million worldwide if you ever bothered to check. you're trying to compare a car to a plane e.g. more cars have been sold therefore close all airports. an ios/android device has way more uses beyond gaming so its not really a fair comparison saleswise. so a gaming device is selling more than its predecessor so it must be a "niche market these days". NO its not the "last console" the vita and wiiu are being released this year…so research your point instead of being misinformed. anyway good bargain

        • vita and wiiu are being released this year

Vita's already released, so, it's not "being released", unless 17th December 2011 is in "this year".

WiiU won't be a hand console, it'll have a console-like controller - not the same.

so research your point instead of being misinformed

          exactly.

Anyway, the intention of all of my posts is not to deflate any fanboi's ego, just to point out that with all things considered, even at this price, 3DS without some Nintendo games thrown-in is a bad deal.

Except that you haven't actually brought that point up in any of your posts.

(Also, this is a good price for a 3DS)

      • +4

yes casual/portable gaming has gone to ios and android that's why the 3ds has sold more worldwide in its 9 months compared to the original ds in its first year which was before the smartphone craze… and that the 3ds is the fastest selling game console to reach 200000 in australia… call 3d a gimmick its the same thing they called the touchscreen on the original ds. and no why on earth would they port their games to the competing platforms thats just plain stupid business move! their is still a large market for dedicated portable gaming not everyone enjoys playing shallow games like angry birds.. (yes i do have an iphone and a 3ds)

        • -2

not everyone enjoys playing shallow games like angry birds.

precisely why Nintendo should port to those platforms.

Generous guesstimate 7.6M 3DSs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3ds#Sales) versus (at least) 100M iOS and god-knows how man Android ("550K new activations/day") devices.
It might the best selling hand console, but that's a niche market these days. More than likely, it'll be the last console.

        • +2

Uh, it's the fastest selling video game console in Australian history. That's not just out of handheld consoles, that's all video game consoles. Ever.

Handheld consoles aren't going away any time soon.

      • Anyhoo…

      • -6

100% agree. Both my kids (9 and 11) have given up the DS (with unlimited games via an M3) for the iPod touch. Those that buy games… 99c, $1.99, $2.99 vs $59.95 etc ? No deal!

        • +5

I'm sure Nintendo are devastated to lose you as a customer. What will they do without you and your kids pirating their games anymore? They'll probably have to file for bankruptcy.

$2.99 quality game vs. $30-50 quality game btw.

        • -3

They'll probably have to file for bankruptcy

          yeah, that's where they're heading (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=7974:JP)

        • +2

First annual loss in the the history of the company's existence = heading towards bankruptcy?

          …um, k.

If Nintendo is heading towards bankruptcy, Sony might as well just pack up and call it night right now.
          http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/quote?ticker=6758:JP

      • +3

Lawl. Isn't the 3DS the quickest selling handheld (or was it console?) to date?

      • +1

i like how you skip over all the other points simply cos you can't rebut them and vita is this year worldwide unless you live in Japan and it was released AFTER the 3ds which you claimed would be the LAST "console" but wait a second you said the 3ds would be the last console?! herp derp and thats why i threw in the wiiu cos you just said console. and why would you deflate my "ego" your logic is just plain confusing ~ put nintendo games on competing platforms, 3ds selling more than its predecessor in the same time frame must be a shrinking niche market, citing wikipedia etc

    • Everyone one says that. I'm getting sick of it.
No one says that about the PS Vita, while the PSP had 5 different models. That's more than the DS.
Just because it's called "Vita" instead of "PSP" I bet is the reason why people don't see that.

The 3DS hasn't really had it's chance to shine yet. Only a small amount of games on the platform have been released. Most of them ports and puzzle games.
Nintendo aren't giving their full attention to the 3DS and neither are 3rd party developers.
I like to think of it as the 3DS is in limbo right now.
It's really off to a slow start, we've only just seen 3DS designed software be released on the platform's eShop. We haven't seen games make use of most of the 3DS's features and graphical capabilities.
The only reason to release a revision model this early would be if something was gravely wrong with the hardware, which really there isn't.

  • I remember seeing this deal a while ago when the pink 3DS was just getting released I think it was.
I remember the page with the prices and the pink one being significantly cheaper.

Pretty sure this is a dupe, I can't be bothered search for it though in this heat.

  • why oh why the 3d function makes me dizzy and sick… I will stick with my dsi XL to save me from getting too blinded. Good price for a 3ds though~

    • +1

You do realise you can turn the 3D effect off, right?

      • Yeh, but what's the point of buying a smaller screen with 3d function and not use it…

        • maybe so you can play games only available on the 3DS.. I've barely ever used the 3D on my console.

        • +1

Yeh, but what's the point of buying a smaller screen with 3d function and not use it…

          … Because the 3DS isn't just a DS with a 3D effect, it's a whole new console with it's own games that won't run on a DS.

  • -1

The catch here is that it has to be the Pink 3DS. Still a good find. I remember buying this on launch for 280 with Rayman 3D.

    • No, it doesn't have to be the Pink one. As per my actual deal post, I got offered either the blue or black for that price.

  • Great price. I'm surprised by how quickly the price is dropping for the 3DS, tbh. I think people expected more than just 3D for Nintendo's next handheld.

I don't personally care as long as the games come. I'll probably get one later this year.

  • +1

    thanks heaps

  • FYI for you who don't already know, if you do get one, Harvey Norman Direct sells 3DS games at a cheaper price via direct import from the UK at $3 capped shipping price up to 10 games.

    http://www.harveynormandirectimport.com

    • +1

Well, cheaper than local retailers. If you're importing anyway, there are usually cheaper options than Harvey Norman Direct Import.

      • The usual uk shops are still better, I bought a white 3ds and have a couple of aust games, and they work just fine on my 3ds

Grabbed ocarina of time (Zelda) for 20p from game uk, better cover too

  • Bought a Cosmos Black for $189 from Springvale HN yesterday.
    Thanks!

  • +1

Is $189 worth buying? or better to get the LE Zelda 3DS from Zavvi for 165 pounds?

    • +1

only if you get the game with the bundle

  • Thanks OP - just went and ordered one at my local HN as there were none in stock (even though i could have bought online!!).
Daughters b'day in 2 weeks and been waiting for a price like this, although as someone above said, you could probably haggle to this price elsewhere anyway

  • -1

Few too many troll like personalities in these comments.

  • Bought a Black one from HN Watergardens today for $189.

  • Dover, you can't haggle to the $189 price, it's below retailers cost. Only chance is to price match.
