Car Rental Vs Taxi / Public Transport in Melbourne for 3 Days

Hi guys

I was wondering what would be the best for transport options in melbourne for a family. Myself, wife and my daughter (20 months).
We are visiting melbourne for friend's wedding and noticed the car rental has been very expensive. $350+
We will need a car seat so uber / ride share isn't an option

I was thinking whether taking a taxi to and from airport + taxi to wedding venue would be cheaper compare to car rental + hotel car park fee ($28)

Any thoughts? Has anyone travelled in Melbourne with family using taxi + public transport combo?

Appreciate your thoughts

Where is hotel in relation to Airport and where is Wedding?

  • Wedding - middle park
    Hotel - north melbourne

public transport is sufficient. unless you want to go to the mountains ..

Taxi from airport for 3 would be cheaper than Skybus.

Once in the city trams are all you need! Parking and driving would be an unneeded hassle IMO.

  • Take the skybus and use trams. They worked pretty well when I've visited in the past.

You will have to give it more time but you don't have to worry about parking (and hook turns) and get to see the sites a bit more.

    • Wow trams take 45 mins? It says you can walk the distance in 90 mins.

For some reason I assumed trams actually moved quickly - they do in GC at least.

Trams are the slowest form of public transport known. They are the worst of all worlds - stopping to pick up passengers, but they also get held up by traffic as they run on normal roads in most cases

  • North Melbourne to Middle Park you could get to quite easily by train or tram
Airport to NM by taxi would be around $50 I guess???

Are you planning to do anything else whilst you are here ?

Sheba is a ride share service that caters to women, families and kids. They will have car seats

a van is 64 dollars a day for 3 days at bunnings

    In taxis:

children aged under 1 year must travel in the back seat, but do not have to use a child restraint

children aged 1 year and over must be in their own seat, with their own properly fastened seatbelt if there is no child restraint or booster seat available

    ……….

Does my child need to use a child restraint in a rideshare service such as Uber?
    Hide

    Yes.

It is the law that all children travelling in a motor vehicle who are under 7 years of age, be restrained in a suitable restraint that is properly adjusted and fastened. A rideshare vehicle

  • I would put public transport the last option if I'm travelling with a 20 months old.

Maybe keep looking for cheaper rental? Try to look for a discount code or deal. Put your dates here someone maybe able to find a good deal for you.

  • GoGet a car is from $89 a day incl 150kms per day. Bring own baby seat.

    • Can't get a GoGet from the airport. Still have to pay for the taxi / Skybus to the town and carry that baby seat around. More effort, not much saving.

      • The the public bus to Broadmeadows and take the train to the nearest GoGet. Being a fold up trolley for the baby seat.

I was recently in Hobart, where car rentals were… ridiculous…

I opted to get a Car Next Door - it was $160 for the weekend inc fuel vs. $600 not inc fuel…

So my suggestion is that one/all of you uber/taxi from the airport to a nearby Car Next Door and use that for the weekend.
You can apply a filter for child seats. Here's one example, https://www.carnextdoor.com.au/trips/new?start_time_iso=2021…

$55 worth of taxis to and from Pascoe Vale + $30 a day + $0.33c per km (which by the sound of it wont me much) - assume you do 100km, it'll cost you $178 plus parking inc fuel.

You can even get a $15 referral code on here to reduce the price even more.

You can't day drink when driving, so there's that.
