Is this the 'service' which electronically blocks you from using the rest of the ink in your cartridge/whatever if you don't have an active subscription?

Wouldn't surprise me, HP have become absolutely rubbish

Probably referring to this story https://www.vice.com/en/article/939ay3/hp-remotely-kills-per…

      And this in their terms

In the event that HP is unable to collect payment from Your Payment Method at the time payment becomes due, HP may temporarily cease your access to the Service, and the Subscription Cartridges will stop functioning, until payment can be collected; if HP is unable to collect payment from You, HP will cancel Your Service and terminate this Agreement pursuant to Section 9 ’Cancellation‘.

      • Wow this is the next level bullshit. Whichever genius came up with this idea should start to look for a career elsewhere

Isn't that fair? If you don't pay for the service you subscribed to, you shouldn't be able to use the service.

          • @eug: Exactly. I guess xyzzyxyzzy is probably used to getting everything for nothing. Although the deal isn't very good value but hardware-as-a-service is very common now.

            • @Krukked: Compared to the exorbitant costs of ink it works out to better value than normal, and free months only make it better. Weird that they would do this when they've also developed ink tank and toner tank printers which work out to much better value again.

    • Yes. Instant Ink is HP's version of subscription-based ink and stops any non-HP ink tanks.

    • It's roughly the same principle as what Fuji Xerox and the big laser printer/MFC makers use for corporate clients without the bricking your ink part.

We use this tech at work: work buys the printers and then pay a monthly fee based on the number of prints the company makes and that payment covers toner replacement and ordering, reams of A4 and A3 paper, and a tech coming onsite every so on to check each printer and do maintenance as needed.
