Should Cafe Still Charge "Extra" for Non-Dairy Milk?

Heard an interesting debate between 2 people today while waiting for my coffee.

Person1's view is that café shouldn't be charging extra for non-dairy milk (eg soy, almond etc) because it's a replacement for the cow's milk. Person2 said it's because non-dairy milk cost more so café are making up for the "extras". Person1 said that might be the case 10 years ago but now prices of non-diary milk has come down a lot of there is no reason to still charge customers, in fact the charge has gone up as well, ranging from $0.70 to $1 for some places(from $0.50).

Keen to hear thoughts of coffee drinkers what they think? Should cafés continue to charge customers for non-dairy milk in 2021?

  • Well, I think if you are fancy enough to "demand" soy/almond/whatever milk, then you shouldn't mind paying extra.

It's like those iPhone users who spend over a grand on a phone and buy a $5 protective case from AliExpress.

    1. Cafe non dairy milk are expensive than store brand non dairy milk.
    2. If the cafe doesn't sell many of those milk, they are right to charge the amount as rest might go into waste.
    3. I like oat milk over regular milk and I don't mind if they charge me more because - no 2.
    4. Enjoy coffee and stop complaining about it. 😄
  • You're paying extra for being a pain in the arse.

  • I prefer Milk Lab Almond Milk for my coffee. It cost around $4 for 1 litre box of milk. Some cafe charge around $0.70. I think it is reasonable. However, any more than that cannot justify the additional charge.

  • hmm, supply and demand. Also I think, some people would like to pay extra thinking about the animal cruelty or something like that.

90% of cafes do NOT use store brand milk because it contains permeate and tastes like shit. Similarly they probability use some overpriced high end non cow milks.

At the end of the day, it's a free market and there's nothing stopping you from opening a competing Cafe catering to cheap lactards/vegantards
