Comprehensive Car Insurance That Don't Require Name and Address of Other at Fault Driver

I'm wondering if there are any comprehensive car insurance companies who don't require me to provide the full name and address of the other fault driver?

I heard around on the internet a long time ago that some specfic insurance company just requires proof of the incident happening showing that you are not at fault, along with a police incident report number… and the insurance company will go after the registered car owner to nominate a driver.

Note: I need this type of insurance as there are too many hit n runs both on the road and at carparks

Sounds strange….. If you do not have the other driver's details then you pay the excess. If you have the other driver's details and they are at fault then you do not have pay. If both parties blame the other for the fault then you need to find a witness and supply their details to the insurance company. The police in most cases do not get involved unless someone is injured and if they do then someone should be booked and that person will be the faulty driver in 99.9999% of cases hopefully.

If you want poof then buy a dashcam as they will record the incident and hopefully prove you or they are at fault.

I think OP is thinking of hit and run cases where they get the license plate number and nothing else

police would give you their info. i just went through that. took a bit though.

Would they? Wouldn't that be invasion of privacy? You could say you were in an accident with any old license plate and get someone's address who didn't do anything wrong 🤔

@Quantumcat: See a car I like, get license plate. Talk to the police, get their address.

            Now it's my car :)

          • @Quantumcat: they would have to investigate

  • NRMA doesn't but you pay extra (from my personal experience).

How many of these claims have you had? If you have too many, the company will eventually refuse to insure you anymore.

If you do not have the details of the other driver, then the insurance company will still pay for your repairs but will charge you the excess.

They want you to provide the details so they can, on your behalf, chase the other at fault driver for the damages.

My advice would be to get a good 2 channel dash cam so that you can show a) the police that the other party did not stop to give details and b) the insurance company that you are not at fault…as well as hopefully getting things like a vehicle rego if it's in a carpark and you're not there.
You will likely still have to pay the excess when you claim but they may refund it if they can get the details from the police. You can generally claim once a year and not lose your NCB. How many claims are you planning on making to switch insurance companies just for this in the PDS? I've been driving for a bit over 20 years and (touch wood) never been involved in a hit and run so it boggles my mind as to why you would pick an insurer based on this alone.

  • Why don’t you ring a few to find out, then report back here?

Say “Asking for a friend” ;)

  • Any insurance can do this. You don't always have to give the other party details to them but you will need to pay excess and your premium will increase.
It is like you hit a tree or a pole on the road. You will be considered at fault (because you pay the excess).
